Did you ever live on a farm? And listen to the cow bells?

Don’t be silly. Cows haven’t bells, they have horns.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

FIVE DAYS FOR THE WORK.

At the last meeting of the City Council, Councilman Black suggested that many residents depend on hiring weeds cut and that if the whole city were asked to cut the weeds in one day there would be more work laid out than could be done, as each weed-cutter could be in only one place at a time. Black suggested that the proclamation cover one ward at a time, and that the days for the different wards be successive days, thus covering the whole city in five days. This was thought a good suggestion and was adopted.

The city physician also reported a seepy gutter on the east side of McGregor Street between Oak and Olive Street. It takes frequent cleanings to keep this gutter in a sanitary condition and seems to be causing sickness in the neighborhood. There is believed to be a spring there which keeps up a sluggish flow of water into this gutter all the time. Dr. Whitney recommended that a sawed stone gutter be installed.

Just Jake Talkin'

There’s prob’ly nothin’ more irritatin’ than havin’ someone ya don’t recognize wave real big at ya from across the street.

It’s not the fact they’re being’ friendly that is the problem. The irritatin’ part is spendin’ the rest of the day tryin’ to figure out who they are. Even days latter ya find yourself spendin’ a few seconds tryin’ to remember. I suppose that is one a the problems with livin’ in a small town. You can irritate folks without even tryin’.

It’s like the old trick we’d play as kids. Standin’ on a busy street corner and pointin’ up to the sky. "Fore long ever’ one is trying to see what you’re pointin’ at.

If ya want to really befuddle someone ya don’t know, walk up and tell ‘em how good it is to see ‘em again.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Here's A Tip

"If you use a hair dryer to dry your hair, put a little of your favorite perfume on the back of it, near the air intake, and your hair will take on the scent of the perfume." -- S.H. in Ohio

Another use for Alka-Seltzer: Got insect bites? D.K. from South Carolina swears by dissolving two tables in a small glass of water and dabbing the solution on minor insect bites.

"To preserve the life of your cupcake pans, make sure to put water into any unused cups. I make cupcakes/muffins, and I like them larger than the recipe calls for. As a result, I usually only fill two-thirds of the cups. My pans have lasted a long time because I take good care of them." -- Amy, via e-mail

"Take 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a small glass of water after a meal for no heartburn and no more expensive heartburn medicine." -- F.F. in Colorado

Here’s a tip from C.S.R. in Florida: Washing produce takes a lot of water, which you can reuse. Catch it in a dishpan, and use it to water your outdoor plants!

"This is an awesome way to clean silver. Take an aluminum-foil pan -- the disposable kind -- and line it with a piece of aluminum foil. Sprinkle in some salt (I use sea salt, but any kind will do), then add a dash of dish soap and fill the container with boiling water. Put your silver, including jewelry, into the mix and, voila, it cleans instantly. Of course, you’ll have to turn the larger pieces, so be careful not to burn yourself." -- L.N. in B.C., Canada
