Diane
Sharits Changes Role For
Main Street Carthage.
Main Street
Carthage Program Director Diane Sharits will be
taking a new position as an independent grant
acquisition coordinator, says Main Street
Carthage Board President Sue Vandergriff.
By having Sharits focus on
bringing in grant money instead of on office
operations, Main Street Carthage officials hope
to make additional funds available to the
organization.
"Were constantly
scrambling for funds," said Vandergriff.
"With more grants we can do more for the
city."
Boardmembers will be handling
most of the office work in the immediate future,
with plans calling for Main Street
Carthages office on the Square to be
staffed by volunteers sometime soon.
Vandergriff says an interim
director will eventually be appointed.
Main Street Carthage is also
hoping to find a renter for the portion of the
building not currently occupied, says
Vandergriff. "Wed like to co-op with
another organization looking for office
space."
Sharits, who joined the
organization in 1993, says she is looking forward
to exploring her new options.
"It gives me the
opportunity to do some consulting," she
says. "I will be able to go out and share
the success of the Carthage Main Street program
with other communities."
Sharits says as she locates
local and nationwide grants, she may be able to
bring in resources for other Carthage agencies as
well as Main Street Carthage.
She says she will also continue
to serve as a consultant for Main Street Carthage
and will keep involved in the program.
"Ive really enjoyed
seeing the community grow and the new businesses
prosper," says Sharits, who takes great
pride in the success of the Main Street Carthage
program.
"I think we can still win
more state awards, and perhaps some national
awards down the road," she says.
"Its been a
blast."
Main Street Carthage, Inc., is
a local non-profit organization whose mission is
to revitalize downtown Carthage and continue to
improve the community economy. The award-winning
Carthage program began in 1988, and was one of
three pilot cities in the Missouri Main Street
Program from 1990 until 1993.
Approximately $6 million in
private and public improvements has been
reinvested in the community since its inception,
and the vacancy rate in the downtown area has
dropped from 60 percent to 11 percent largely due
to the work of the Main Street Carthage program.
Main Street Carthage provides
design assistance to property owners looking at
renovations, promotes improvements to the
downtown area with projects such as the recent
mural, flower baskets and banners, and sponsors
events such as the annual Christmas Parade,
Farmers Market, and Antiques and Collectible
Appraisal Fair.
We Have a New
Helper Here!
by Robin Putnam, artCentral
This last Friday evening we
really had a great time !! Not only did we have a
big turnout we actually sold a few paintings !!
We were very happy to see soooo many new faces
and really glad to see old friends and our oh so
very supportive members !!
As usual we had a super array
of tasty hors doeuvres and ice cold
beverages !! Thanks to one of our Board members
we served a ton of shrimp cooked up with her own
secret seasonings as well as mushrooms stuffed
with sausage, cream cheese, green onions and
parmesan and a spinach and artichoke dip with a
bit of a twist !! We definately didnt have
any leftovers that night !!
Its pretty funny when our
guests say we should write a cookbook with all of
our tasty hors doeuvre recipes in it.... we
only have 3,500 cook-books in the basement !!!
Anyway...........its all
for fun and for the benefit of our community and
the artists!!
If you didnt make it
Friday evening the show will be up until
September 29th so you have plenty of time !!
We have a few changes going on
around here. Our helper, Danielle, has taken on a
new job as one of the managers out at the Ranch
House so we have said farewell to her. We have
really appreciated having her around this last
year !! But as we all know things change and
change is good !! We wish her all the best and
know that she will be one of the best managers
the RH has ever seen !!
So.......that meant we had to
find someone else to spend some time out here and
lend us a helping hand......and we did !! Our new
helper is Pat and she will start today !! She has
only lived in Carthage for a few weeks and we
hope she will feel at home here before too long.
She has finished an associates degree at Crowder
and is taking a few night classes at MSSC. We
welcome her to our little gallery. Hope
youre all cool !! If not, come on
in........we are !!
More.......next week. 358-4404.
