Without geometry, life is pointless.

A man passing an orchard noticed a farmer with a herd of pigs gathered around his feet. The farmer was holding a pig up above his shoulder so it could bite off an apple. Then, he put the pig down and raised another, then another.

The passerby shouted to the farmer: "Why don’t you just shake the tree and let the apples fall on the ground? That would save a lot of time."

The farmer responded, "What do pigs care about time?"

The racehorse owner was annoyed with the running of his horse at the race.

He turned on the jockey.

"Flaherty, could you not have raced faster?"

"Sure I could have, but you know we are supposed to stay on the horse."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Now 73 Prisoners in the County Jail -

Heat Almost Unbearable.

There were 73 prisoners in the county jail this morning and this with the thermometer in the 90’s. Then it is considered that the jail was built to accommodate about twenty-five, it can be judged whether or not the institution is over-crowded.

The highest record of attendance is 82 and was reached in Sheriff W. S. Crane’s administration. As a usual thing the number dwindles very materially in summer, but this year no such decrease can be noticed. This indicates that the regular jail population is growing.

In the wintertime many persons purposely commit some minor offense in order to bread into jail and thus secure food and shelter, but that class steer clear of prison in the summer. No sane person would purposely break into the Jasper county bastile during the heated term crowded as it is.

Mornin',

Did a drive through of Joplin from Maiden Lane to the new by-pass over the weekend. We have a continuous video of the drive on our web site, www.morninmail.com.

I know a lot of folks like myself have stayed away to let emergency personnel do their job. Hopefully the video will give a real sense of the power of the tornado and the enormity of the task ahead for those affected.

There is a lot of information being passed along on the internet, but those who aren’t connected miss most of that. We’ll try to keep a good portion of it in print to keep the information flowin’.

The Y seems to be keepin’ a good handle on what is needed. Call them if you want to help.

This is some fact, but mostly,

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• Purchase a large tub of cookie dough, and when you make the first batch, go ahead and portion out the remaining dough by teaspoons onto a cold cookie sheet. Freeze as balls, and then replace them in the container they came from. Refreeze. Now you can take out only as many cookies as you want to make, and cook them straight from frozen.

• "This is a tip for painting stairs. Paint every other stair. Let them dry. Then paint the other stairs. This will make your staircase useable the whole way through your paint job." -- R.L. in Michigan

• Spray old artificial flowers with hair spray to make the look fresh and vibrant.

• Many food containers can be reused to store personal items. Glass jars can be cleaned and labels removed. Paperboard boxes can be custom trimmed and covered with leftover wrapping paper or wallpaper. Paper milk cartons can be cleaned with soap and water, dried thoroughly and then painted to hold a variety of items. Don’t overlook the many possibilities in a piece of recycling or trash.

• Use plain household vinegar to kill grass that grows in the cracks of walkways and driveways.

• "Use bathroom fans appropriately. Make sure to turn them off. They vent air to the outside, and that includes your paid-for air conditioning, too. Close the bathroom door after showering and let the fan run for about 10 minutes. Then turn it off." -- D.A. in Texas
