today's laugh

Advertising certainly brings results. Why, yesterday I advertised for a night watchman and just last night I was robbed.

The only thing you can get for a quarter today is a dime.

Jim: I got a razor that has twin blades.
Tom: How do you like it?
Jim: Shaves good. But now instead of getting nicks, I get ditto marks.

Librarian: Please be quiet. The people next to you can’t read.
Boy: What a shame! I’ve been reading since I was six.

Raving Beauty: A girl who came out last in a beauty contest.

NEW LIGHT GUARD PRESIDENT.

Plans for "Non-Com" School, By-Laws, Cannon and Flag.

The Light Guard, after a rousing drill last night, elected Lieut. John Henkel civil president to succeed Corporal Alexander, resigned.

A "non-com" school was organized, by which the non-commissioned officers are to meet Wednesday night to study the tactics theoretically, preparatory for practice at Friday drills.

Capt. Hiatt, Lieut. Gilbreath, Lieut. Henkel, Sergts. Woodford, Ross and Howell, Corporals Givens and Hall and Privates Twitchell, Bradford and Farrer (first) were made a committee to frame new by-laws.

Committees were also appointed to secure a cannon and a flag for the Carthage company if possible. White duck trousers were ordered for the company this summer.

  Today's Feature

Two New Carthage Police Sergeants.

On April 23rd, 2001 the Carthage Police Civilian Personnel Board met to interview candidates for the position of Sergeant within the Police Department. There are two positions open due to the disability retirement of Sgt. Randy Evans last fall and the retirement of Sgt. James Baker this spring.

After interviewing the candidates, the Board recommended the promotions of Officer David Martin and Officer Scott White. Both officers will be promoted to Sergeant in short order and both will be assigned to night shifts on separate squads.

Officer David G. Martin began his career with the Carthage Police Department on April 25th, 1987. He has served eight years on the night shift and six years on the day shift. He has graduated from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academies Supervision Course and has been a Field Training Officer for Carthage.

Officer Scott B. White began his career with the Carthage Police Department in May of 1995. Officer White has spent most of those years on the night shift. He has also served as a Field Training Officer for the Department.

New Weed Control
Ordinance Enforced.

news release

Last fall the City Council made several significant changes in the ordinance governing weed control. The current ordinance now considers weed growth over 8 inches to be a violation of the nuisance abatement ordinance. That length used to be 12 inches.

A second change is that current ordinance now states that "The notice shall give the owner or occupant (5) five days in which to abate the said nuisance," the owner or occupant can (within the same five day period) appeal the decision to the Director of Engineering.

This five day abatement period is significantly shorter than in the previous ordinance.

Chief of Police Dennis Veach says it is important to note that the change to a five day abatement period pertains to ALL nuisance issues; multiple unlicensed vehicles, trash, junk, etc. Not just to the weed issue.

While enforcing the new ordinances, the police department will work to educate folks about the changes.

We Want To See More of Carthage!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

We are so tickled with the great response we have been getting in regards to our opening receptions !! We had another evening last Friday of body to body in the gallery !! We love it !!

We still would like to see more Carthage people !! We do better all the time but, hands down, our visitors are from everywhere else......not many from town !!

Our membership reflects the same numbers.......we have more members NOT from Carthage than from Carthage.......... ...Hmmmm.

We will be having a membership drive soon and hope to rectify those numbers. We hope everyone receiving one of our drive letters will respond with either a donation or for more fun.....a membership !!

This show has a lot of really cool stuff !!! You’d better hurry in and see because people are snapping up the Trisha Courtney paintings and Randy Wright’s sterling silver jewelry !! There is a little something for every taste, every budget and any wall !!!

artCamp is shaping up but not quite there, yet !! Give us a little more time !!

The Bill Snow stone carving weekend workshop is filling up fast !! If you think you might like to give it a try sign up soon !!

There will be a dinner for the carvers during the workshop as well as musical entertainment ! !

More.........next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th & www. ozarkartistscolony.com

Mornin',

Looks like the girls softball fields out at the Fair Acres Sports Complex will be in shape ta be used this summer. Looks like a first class setup.

The Community is fortunate to have the Steadley Trust helpin’ out with funds to develop the facility. They are puttin’ close to a million bucks out for the four fields and the creation of some "utility" fields ta be available for other sports.

The City of course has ta take responsibility for the upkeep and other operational costs. For the last few years that has amounted to around $40,000 a year. The new fields will add some to that, but shouldn’t be overwhelming.

For the amount a use the facility gets, it’s a pretty small price ta pay.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Water info for those of us who may forget the importance of drinking good clean water several times a day.

• A majority of Americans are chronically dehydrated as is most of the world’s population.

• Our thirst mechanism becomes weak and is often mistaken for hunger...try drinking a glass of water or fruit as opposed to eating a snack. Retrain your body to recognize thirst.

• By the time you realize you are thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated which slows the body’s metabolism.

• Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatique.

• Adequate water consumption may ease those achy joints and back pain.

• Your brain requires fluids to operate at it’s best.

• Think about it....our body has many "filters" and not flushing a filter with good clean fluid will not allow the filter to operate at it’s best. Some of the body’s filters include kidneys, bladder, liver.

When refering to water, that is exactly the fluid we mean. Soda, tea and the such are not good clean water. If a simple glass of water can help all this, shouldn’t you be on your way to get a drink NOW?
