A son at college wrote his father:
"No mon, no fun, your son."
The father answered:
"How sad, too bad, your dad."

I go to a restaurant when I want to rest and rant.

"It is strange that no one has ever been able to find Captain Kidd’s treasure."
"Oh, well, Captain Kidd isn’t the only man who has put his money into real estate and couldn’t get it out."

A Shirt Waist Picnic.

The Joplin Clover Leaf club enjoyed a picnic and dance at Lakeside last night. It was intended as a shirt waist affair and although all the gentlemen were minus coats, the real genuine shirt waist was not very much in evidence. This was Joplin’s first attempt at launching forth its society young men clothed in this new (?) garb and the coatless youth seemed to feel quite out of place. Miss Edith Boss of this city was among the dancers.

Marian Days Police Report.

Police Chief Dennis Veach reported to the Council last week that the Marian Days celebration went well from his point of view.

"From a law enforcement perspective," said Veach, "it was almost without incident. As you recall, last year we had a number of fights and fisticuffs and issues with Asian gangsters, organized gangs from various locals. They did not really materialize this year. A number of them showed up Friday and Saturday in Joplin, but did not come here.

"We did not have a single reported incident of violence on the grounds.

"In the same time frame, we had ten assaults in the City and I think twelve reports of stealing. No disturbances on the grounds and two reports of stealing, one that we resolved.

"It’s an amazing event. Folks who have been here twenty years thought that perhaps it had gone as smoothly as it has ever gone.

"We arrested three people for outstanding warrants and issued fifty-four parking tickets.

"It went extremely well."

Mornin',

Police Chief Veach also praised City employees from all departments for their assistance durin’ the Marian Days Celebration.

Parks, Streets, Fire, Engineering, and Police all had a hand in keeping the event moving smoothly.

Assistance from various other law enforcement agencies also played a role according the Chief. He said that Carthage only supplies about a third of the police personnel required.

Havin’ fifty or sixty thousand folks packed into six or eight square blocks is always a little scary, but each year it seems to pass without major incident.

The cost of the police personnel is split between the City and the Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix, organizers of the event.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Dear Al & Kelly: I’ve been working on refinishing a table for a while now. The biggest problem I had was getting the sandpaper into the smaller cracks. The abrasive paper just went to pieces by itself. I tried putting a credit card inside the folded paper and had much better luck. The credit card gives the sandpaper a supportive backing to help it stay strong while I work it into the cracks. It made al the difference. My cards are all "maxed" out anyway, so why not put them to some better use for a while?

Dear Kelly: Our high-rise apartment building is convenient to work, but there are some drawbacks. We have a key for our door, a key for our elevator, a key for our parking garage, one for our storage room and another for the utility area. It’s hard to keep up with all the keys, so we got organized. The keys are color-coded now, with those plastic caps they sell at locksmith shops. We got a different color for each area, and it matches the walls, floor or something in that area to make it easy to pick out the right key. It has really saved us some time and aggravation.

SUPER HINT-If you are tired of finding powdered shop compounds ruined because of humidity, try putting them into sealable plastic bags and then put them back into their boxes.
