Letters to the Editor

Opinions expressed reflect those of the writer
and not necessarily those of the Mornin' Mail.

Dear Editor,

On behalf of the 16,611 youth and volunteer members of the Ozarks Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, I want to thank the United Way of Carthage for its many years of continuous financial support of our scouting program, knowing that thousands of children and young adults have experienced a most outstanding outdoor educational program that helps to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values found in the Scout Oath & Law:

Scout Oath

On my honor I will do my best to do my

Duty to God and my country and to obey

The Scout Law; to help other people at all

Time; to keep myself physically strong,

Mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law

A Scout is: Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent.

Once again, we thank the United Way of the Carthage for helping to make scouting happen in the Ozarks and look forward to a great United Way campaign this fall.

Sincerely,

Dean Ertel

Next Exhibit Opens Sept. 14th.

We just want to say quickly that it’s just two and a half weeks away from the MGA. There are a lot of our friends out there scurrying about trying to get all their stuff done in preparation for this big weekend’s event.

There will be a few of the auction pieces on display in the downtown area. Late in August the Chamber window will have numerous pieces of art all headed for the show and there should soon be a limestone sculpture displayed in the lobby of Bank of America. We appreciate these opportunities to show off !!

The exhibit in the gallery now will run through August 31st. Stop in and see if you haven’t already.

Our next exhibit will open on September 14th. Everyone is invited. This will be a show featuring the works of two talented artists, Karolee Blanchard, Joplin, and Lil Olive, Springfield.

Karolee started out as a child taking art classes at Spiva, spent two years at the University of Arkansas learning the basics of oil painting where she found she enjoyed realism and the techniques of the "old masters".

Later she would spend three years at the University of Columbia where she majored in art education. She has taught art in the Kansas City and Joplin areas but has now focused on her own painting. Her focus is on realism and creating a mood with lighting.

Lil Olive lives in Springfield where she enjoys working in black and white photography and oil painting. She says in her work the two mediums feed into each other and sometimes overlap. Her work has been described as funny, strange, surreal, complex, psychological and whimsical.

She says painting keeps her sane and amused and hopes others get something from her work, good or bad, just as long as it com-municates.

Both of these women are talented and fun. We hope we have piqued your interest in this upcoming exhibit and that we’ll see you at the opening !! September 14th, 6-8pm. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages served.

More......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th www. ozarkartistscolony.com

Mornin',

Wild gasoline price fluctuations across town the last couple a days. Course by the time your readin’ this, they could be back leveled out again.

If ya aren’t gettin’ out much, you may not have seen the trend setter Murphy’s bein’ a few cents higher than a couple other stations in town. That’s the first time I’ve seen that.

The low price registered in at a buck thirty-one with the high of a buck forty-nine.

I didn’t get into Joplin, but a couple a other stations outside of town were showin’ in the buck thirty-nine area.

It’s a long way from the seventeen cent gas around durin’ the gas wars of the fifty’s and early sixty’s, but it still must be hectic for the personnel keepin’ up with the changes.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

Here it is another school year upon us. Having followed the "health trends" over the past 10 years as school begins, we have the common cold coming, head lice, stress, hyperactivity issues, and general tiredness just to name some of the conditions which become prevalent at the beginning and throughout the school year. So, a quick reminder to all the kids of the basic and polite ways how to not spread your germs. Please, cover your mouth when coughing and/or sneezing. It appears to have become common practice to just cough as though it were another word in a conversation...well, it is a nasty habit and the mouth should be covered and head turned. Snotty tissues need to be thrown away in a trash can, not on the floor or under a desk. Spitting, although a popular "distance" sport, is also an extremely bad habit and germy at that!

Frequent use of shampoos and conditioners containing tea tree oil may be the preventative for head lice. Non-toxic treatments are available at your health food store and should be used if frequent or heavy use is necessary. Teach your children that the lice can be spread through clothes as well as hairbrushes and combs.

The parents of children who take multiple vitamins, have told me they can tell a difference in their childrens’ ability to adapt to the stress of school and they are less likely to "catch whatever is going around." Children suffer from stress and less desirable eating habits can compound problems. Ask your practitioner about the addition of a B vitamin and some protein prior to school.

This article is intended to serve as a reminder of the importance of teaching your children good heath habits. Most any child thinks the sleeve serves as a tissue, coughing on someone is funny, and sneezing is a "legal" loud diversion. Please be responsible and teach them differently. It really does matter.
