today's laugh

That son of mine is the strangest boy I ever saw.
How come?
I sent him to put water in the car, and when I went out I found a bucket of water in the back seat.

Some men take hours to tell you why they are a man of few words.

Japanese Mice Born Last Night.

Interest is much increased in the cute little pair of Japanese dancing mice which Walter Harrington has in a cage in his west side store, since it was discovered this morning that Mrs. Mouse had two little youngsters to pet—born during the night.

Walter Harrington was as much surprised as pleased to find them this morning and at once removed Mrs. Mouse and her family to the cage in the postoffice store, so she could have her nest to herself in taking care of her family.

Christmas for Kids.

The Carthage Fire department, KODE 12, and other area Fire departments are working together to provide Christmas toys for local children.

The toys will be distributed at a Christmas dinner for the children and their families on Dec. 20th at the Joplin America Legion building at Fourth Street and Schifferdecker Avenue.

New toys and used ones in good condition are being accepted. The Firemen give the children new toys and used toys that are in good condition. Toys may be left at the Carthage Fire Dept. and Wal-Mart Super Center in the red toy collection box.

An educational toy will be purchased for each child in the Jasper, McDonald, and Newton Counties Head Start Programs.

Residents who know of families that might need help may call (417) 624-1851 or stop by the Carthage Fire Dept. and fill out a Christmas application. Applications are screened with other toy programs before being accepted to prevent families from receiving Christmas help from more than one agency. Families are referred by employers, churches, neighbors, schools, Economic Security Corp., and other toy programs that are no longer accepting applications.

If you would like to make a cash donation to buy new toys or help with the Christmas dinner make your check payable to the Firefighters "Christmas for Kids." Donations may be left at the Carthage Fire Station.

Mid-America Title Loans in Joplin will be matching all cash contributions made to our toy program until Dec. 19th. Please contact Battalion Chief Ron Hitchcock at the Carthage Fire Department for more information.

Mornin',

Just a week away from winter startin’. Also the shortest day of the year. After that the sun will gradually stay around a little longer each day until summer begins in June. Then the long retreat back to the 21st of December.

It’s kinda reassuring that there is some reasoning behind what date marks the beginnin’ of winter and summer. It musta taken someone years (o.k., at least one year if it wasn’t cloudy) to figure out the cycle of the sun and pinpoint the shortest and longest periods of daylight. It’s a natural occurrence that neither man or government has any control over. It’s a rule we all have ta live by, end of discussion.

Sometimes, tradition does stand the test of time.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly.....and anxious and angry and overly excited and/or tired and so on and so on. With December upon us, these days can be hard on the nerves. There are many nutrients which can be beneficial for the nerves including the following:

• B-vitamins are needed in every one of the billions of cells in our bodies. They help prevent fatigue, mental depression, nervousness, and an almost endless array of diseases associated with the nervous system. Eating on the run and many of the processed foods we have today can leave us deficient in these most important vitamins.

• An equally important mineral for the nervous system is magnesium. Some have called it the "calm" mineral. Some who suffer with constipation find it relieves that condition also. Magnesium is needed for a strong heart muscle.

• Some of the stress of getting behind may be eliminated by the use of Pantothenic Acid which is utilized by all cells. It is know to increase strength and endurance...some have even added it may help premature aging.

• My favorite is sit down and relax with a cup of hot tea. If you haven’t tried Kava it is something I enjoy or the standard cup of chamomile always hits the spot.

• To eliminate some stress, try a smile!!
