Pyramids to Meet Weekly.

The Ancient Order of Pyramids will initiate several new members at their regular meeting in Oddfellows Hall tomorrow evening. This order will now meet weekly until the first part of the year to initiate new members and to work up an increased interest among the members. Another Vote for CVB.

The Lodging Tax/Tourism Committee handed down another split decision at its meeting last Wednesday morning. The Committee met at Memorial Hall to assess the possibility of using the building for a Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Carthage Main Street Director Carol Green made the motion to bring Main Street, the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, and the CVB under one roof at Memorial Hall. Seven of the ten member committee were present. The vote was 4-3 in favor of the motion. The vote at an earlier meeting was 5-4 in favor of using City personnel to operate the CVB.

Those on the Committee voting in favor of the motion were Carol Green; Beth Simmons, former interim Main Street Director; Michael Goolsby, Grand Avenue Bed and Breakfast; and Dexter Friesen, Chair of the Committee and owner of Econo Lodge.

Those voting against the motion were Max McKnight, Chamber Director; Jackie Boyer, Council member; and Tom Short, City Administrator. Members absent were Leann Keepper, Victorian Carthage; Caryl MacMorran, Historic Preservation; and Allan VanDenBerg, Precious Moments.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

Christmas Eve almost always meant a little road time as a kid. The family would pile in the car and wander around to various households to drop off little tokens of friendship to some people the folks knew.

The most typical gift was a six-pack of Coca Cola. Those little stubby bottles that at the time sold for a nickel a piece. (plus deposit of course.)

The past couple a years I’ve noticed the Christmas version of those little Cokes. Although not aware of it at the time, our family musta been part of a larger movement to get colas distributed on Christmas Eve. Either that or we single handedly began yet another Christmas tradition that has become part of the national pulse. ‘Course the Coke merchandisin’ machine prob’ly had a little to do with it.

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Dear Al & Kelly: I used a candle to check my electric wall outlets for air leaks. I held the lighted candle next to each outlet on a windy day, so any air infiltration coming in around the plates would cause the flame to flicker. I found several with large air leaks.

So, I purchased the foam insulators that are designed to fit behind cover plates. After installing the foam, I retested the outlets , and now I’m satisfied. I figure the extra insulation will pay for itself this winter, not to mention making the house more comfortable.

Q: The door from the patio into the garage of my home has no light switch, and so coming in that way at night is like going through a scary mine field.

It’s a rented house, so I don’t want to get an expensive wiring job. Any easy and cheap solution?

A: You could buy a battery powered fixture that mounts on a wall. That would give off enough light for you to avoid the booby traps.

If there is an electrical outlet in the garage, you could install a night light that has a sensor on it.

Visit a hardware store, home center or lighting supplier to see what’s new on the market. You might be truly enlightened.
