today's
laugh
Pity poor old George Washington. He
couldnt blame his troubles on the previous
administration.
Many men are not superstitious because
they think it brings bad luck.
Wife: My husband frightens me the way
he blows smoke rings through his nose.
Psychiatrist: That isnt unusual.
Wife: But my husband doesnt
smoke.
Teenagers complain theres nothing
to do, then stay out all night doing it.

Holiness Brethren
Wrangled in
Scriptural Terms Last Night.
Residents on James hill tell of a hot
and loud argument between two prominent Holiness brethren
last night.
Notwithstanding the nature of the
heated conversation the worthy gentlemen never forgot
their religious methods and biblical quotations where the
chief means used to defend the principles set forth by
each.
A rapidly gathering crowd alarmed the
participants and with a "farewell, brother,"
they parted.
The Pyramids held a picnic and practice
drill at Lakeside last night. The team is preparing for
the district association meeting at Lakeside next Tuesday
at which several orders will drill for the prizes
offered.

Today's Feature
Barnett to be
Honored.
Avery Barnett of Carthage will
be one of six students to be honored at a
reception hosted by Seventh District Congressman
Roy Blunt this Sunday at the Ramada Inn in
Springfield. Barnett has been accepted to enter
West Point Army Academy.
"These six young
Missourians have worked hard and served their
schools and their communities with
distinction," said Blunt. "They have
earned one of the highest honors that
Americas high school students can receive
and will represent their families and Southwest
Missouri well at our service academies. Im
confident that theyll continue being
leaders on and off campus."
Also entering the Service
Academies this summer from Southwest Missouri are
Travis Hartman, Springfield; DeAnna Moss, Joplin;
Michael Gentry, Joplin; Megan Storm, Joplin; and
Christopher Erlewine, Neosho.
"In exchange for their
service in Americas Armed Forces,"
Blunt commented, "these six students will
receive a world-class education. The academies
build leaders and instill in their students
dedication to duty and service."

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
Happened down a street off
Garrison the other night and was a little
surprised to see what was left of a small
motor home parked on the street. A rather
large tree had fallen directly on the cab and
smashed it flatter than a flitter.
The tree had been neatly
trimmed off so as to eliminate any danger to
passersby. Im guessin the
evidence was bein left so the insurance
adjuster could see the damage first hand.
I woulda hated to be roused
out of a sound sleep ta find tree branches
pokin in the bed room. Most likely the
owners were not in the craft when the event
took place.
The accident acts a
reminder of the forces that nature can expose
durin this time a year. Keep your head
down.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

Weekly Column
Click and Clack Talk Cars.
Dear Tom and Ray:
We have a 1985 Oldsmobile Delta
88 with 64,000 miles on it. With all of the
ventilation controls off, the heat will suddenly
come on. With the air conditioner on, it suddenly
changes to heat when I step on the gas hard, and
then returns to AC when I release the gas pedal.
With the controls set for outside fresh air, it
will change to heat on its own. Do you know why
its doing this? - Euclid
RAY: Did you buy it used,
Euclid? Maybe this car was originally from
Anchorage, and its having withdrawal
symptoms.
TOM: Its a vacuum
problem. All the ventilation controls and the
heater control valve on this car are operated by
vacuum. And the default position (i.e. when
theres no vacuum or very low vacuum) is
"heat."
RAY: So when theres not
enough vacuum, the blend doors and the heater
control valve will begin to open and allow heat
in.
TOM: When you turn on the AC or
the fresh-air vent, or turn the whole ventilation
system off, engine vacuum is supposed to keep the
valves and doors closed. But for some reason, the
vacuum youre getting is insufficient.
RAY: You may have a broken hose
somewhere, or the control unit on the dash board
may be faulty and may be creating a vacuum leak.
TOM: And the reason it gets
worse when you step down hard on the gas is
because thats when the engine naturally
produces the least vacuum. So if you suddenly
need to climb a hill or pass somebody, you step
on the gas, the engine vacuum decreases, the
doors open, an voila! You get heat.
RAY: Have your mechanic look
for a vacuum leak, Euclid. Finding it and fixing
it should take the heat off the situation.
