today's laugh

Talkative Lady (on board ship): "Can you swim?"
Sailor: "Only at times ma’am."
T.L.: "Only at times. How strange; and when do these moments of ability come to you?"
Sailor: "When I am in the water ma’am."

A caterpillar looked up at a butterfly and said, "You’ll never get me up in one of those!"

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Bought a Double Corner Lot.

Mrs. E. S. Williams yesterday bought from Mrs. Melinda C. Wilson of St. Louis the old Dr. James F. Wilson place at Main and Chestnut streets for $4,000. The lot has a 100 foot front on Main and Lyon streets and 200 feet on Chestnut. There is a cottage on the lot which will doubtless give way in time to an elegant residence, since this is one of the most desirable corners in town. W. H. Black was the agent in the deal. The lot sold at a good price.

Mrs. Williams already owned the double lot south of this, where her home is located, and thus becomes the owner of an entire block, 200 feet square.

The north lot was bought in order to control the erection of buildings thereon, Mr. and Mrs. Williams seeking to prevent the rumored erection of a row of houses with a Chestnut street front on the lot. There is room for two good residences on the lot.

Golf Cart and Hall Paint Bids.

The City Council Public Services Committee is scheduled to meet this evening at 7 p.m in Memorial Hall.

The agenda for the meeting includes discussion and consideration of bids for painting the interior of the auditorium. Renovation of other portions of the building is scheduled to begin later this year. Plans are for the auditorium to be available for at least limited use during the renovation.

The Committee is also scheduled to discuss the Memorial Hall east side heating unit.

The disposition of the wind direction device used at the former airport is also to be considered.

Bids for new golf carts for the Municipal Golf course are scheduled to be reviewed. Initial plans were to add some carts to the fleet including a couple of gas powered units. The gas powered carts would be used mainly for maintenance and marshaling duties.

The Public Services Committee meets each first Monday of the month and oversees all City owned buildings and the Parks and Recreation Department.

Mornin',

The good news is that the current golf carts are paid for. If you remember the City signed for the lease/purchase of the original carts several years ago and they were paid for from revenues from rentin’ the carts. Not a bad set up. Not many arrangements that actually cover expenses, maybe even make a little to go back into the golf course.

With the trade-in value of the current carts, the cost of purchase for new carts should be reduced enough to make this buy a little easier than last time. (I’m assumin’ there won’t be any changes in cart rental rates).

The cart barn should be large enough, but just barely, to house the new vehicles. That and havin’ all the chargers already wired in should keep the expense down. Fore!

This is some fact, but mostly,

The Super Handyman

by Al Carrell & Kelly Carrell

Dear Al & Kelly:

I store my long extension ladder on the inside of my wooden backyard fence along the side of my house. I have installed heavy-duty hooks in the fence posts, and the ladder hangs there out of the way and easy to get when I need it. It’s much better than taking up space in my garage, where it was difficult to get at without backing the cars out of the way.

Consider chaining down the ladder, as it might be just the thing a burglar needs to get into your home or your neighbor’s.

Q: Our shake-shingle roof has moss growing all over it, most noticably on the north side of the house. What can be done to get rid of it, and then how do we prevent its return?

A: If you have trees that overhang the roof, trim them back to allow sunshine to hit the roof. That can help prevent it from coming back.

You can also use a mild bleach-and-water solution or pressure-washing to get rid of the moss.

There is another preventive that sounds like voodoo but does work. You insert zinc strips under the ridge shingles. As rainwater runs across the strips, it picks up some of the zinc and distributes it, preventing future moss or mildew growth.

SUPER HINT-The next time you are sharpening your garden hoe, cut a small "V" into one side and sharpen it too. The little indention is great for cutting a weed down to size in tight spots.
