CARTHAGE A MINING CENTER.

It Is the Liveliest Camp in the District, Says an Operator.

"Carthage is today the liveliest camp in the mining district," said one of the prominent mine operators of the county today. "I have been all over the district of late and nowhere is there as large a percent of the existing mines busy and active as there is right here. Our mines are all producing stuff, and being in the geographical center of a zinc territory extending from Springfield on the east to Galena on the west, I predict a great future for the Carthage camp.

"There’s the "Sure Thing" on the Hudson Mining Co.’s land just south of Pleasant Valley. This rain has given them water and I think they will be ready to start their mill next Monday. The Hudson company has what will within twelve months prove the biggest producing shaft in Jasper county. They now have a drill driven 100 feet into ground that will prove 33 per cent ore, and is even better than the dirt from which the Pleasant Valley made its big run of $6,000 in a month with jack at $18."

In addition there is the South Carthage, two miles south of Pleasant Valley, probably the most active camp in the Carthage district. A number of Webb City and Carterville men are coming out there and getting interested.

East of the South Carthage, the old Kimberly and Lucky 13 tracts have been leased direct from the owner, Col. Corby, and combined in one good producing mine by new operators. The stuff was on the line between the two tracts, and the heretofore unsatisfactory conditions are now overcome.

At the Cholwell or Southeastern land the Providence company’s big pump broke last Thursday and has just got to going again. Four tons of ore were cleaned up in sinking ten feet in the pump shaft.

Northwest of town the Mignonette is making steady ore and hauling regularly to town.

The Hayseed, operated by Aaron Myers on adjoining land has just finished work in its pump shaft and will go to working day and night shifts next Monday, getting advantage of the moonlight for the top work.

MGE Cost Of Gas Rate Approved.

The Missouri Public Service Commission approved Missouri Gas Energy’s (MGE) request to set its winter cost of gas rate at $0.51682 per one hundred cubic feet (CCF), a decrease of 31 percent from the current rate of $0.76129 per CCF. Last November, the company set its winter rate at $0.68056 per CCF. The new cost of gas rate will take effect on November 1.

Consistent with recommendations from various state task forces, MGE is using several different techniques to stabilize prices for this winter, including the use of fixed prices and financial instruments. Although gas rates will be less than last year, they will still be above the average prices customers experienced throughout much of the last decade.

The company noted that usage and bill amounts are greatly affected by weather and encouraged customers to take appropriate weatherization and conservation steps to moderate bill amounts.

Cost of gas rates are typically adjusted in April and November, with a third adjustment available in the winter if needed.

Members Exhibiting At
New Local Restaurant.

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

Last Friday’s opening reception was another wonderful evening !! We had an early crowd and a late crowd and everyone really enjoyed all the drawings and paintings and food !!

The ‘hang out in the kitchen crowd’ was wild as a March hare but that’s the way we like it !!

With Joe’s paintings and drawings downstairs and Bobby and Jake’s drawings upstairs we are covered from head to toe with art !!

This is a great opportunity to see some local talent so if you haven’t come by yet be sure to stop in and check it all out. The exhibits run through November 30th.

Our next exhibit will be a group show with Bill Snow, Jorge Leyva, Joplin, Perry Fleming, Carthage and Penny Wilkinson, Carl Junc-tion.

These talented people will be exhibiting some of their latest paintings and sculp-tures. The sculptures range from alabaster to limestone to marble and will include the human form and animals.

December 7th will be that opening reception. There is a good chance we will have an artist booked for the upstairs Member’s Gallery at the same time. Once we get that settled we will let you know the details !

Some of our members are starting a sculpture group. We are thrilled to have them using one of our classrooms !

Besides our pottery room we offer members the use of our classrooms and offer them a discount on any workshops.... ...... aren’t we nice ??!!

We still want ideas for the large stone out in the yard ! We hope to get a lot of people interested in sub-mitting designs and in wanting to help with the actual carving !

If you submit a design you must help carve and if your design is chosen you must carve and help see to it that the project is finished ! Designs can be left at artCentral.

If you just want to help carve that’s OK we will need plenty of workers !!

On another note....2 of our members are exhibiting their paintings at Shellie’s. A new restaurant here in Carthage. Kim Leffen and Debbie Reed, both from Joplin, will have their work displayed through the holidays.....we hope !

Lots of art everywhere so check it out !! Here and at Shellie’s on Third by the post office !

More......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th www. ozarkartistscolony.com Open Tues. - Sat 9am - 3pm.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

Turkey Day is comin’ in just a few weeks and I’m already figurin’ on the variety of fixin’s that will be on my plate.

Over the years the choices have changed some as the younger relatives took over the chores of preparin’ their various dishes. No one makes the potato bread my grandmother used ta always prepare. Although it’s somewhat of a family secret, there have been a Thanksgivin’ or two without a turkey. Various rice casseroles have moved in on occasion and even cheese dip from time to time. ‘Course ever now and then there will be a traditional Thanksgivin’ dinner with all the trimmin’s. It’s still hard ta beat turkey and dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade rolls and a big piece a pumpkin’ pie. Hold the whipped cream, I’m stuffed.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’. (burp)

Took a short trip to Texas here recently and came home to a fabulous blanket of color and warm breezes. No question about why I enjoy coming home to Carthage. All was well down south. In spite of the recent attack, people in these "target" areas seem to be more optimistic and friendly than before. On the overall, Houston was easy, Galveston was beautiful and Victoria was charming as ever. One thing different was discussion regarding taking responsibility for ones-self.

On one simple issue, water. I believe we have a great system here in Carthage, BUT I do not expect the responsibility of clean water to be only theirs. It is relatively inexpensive to clean our water at the tap. Depending on the level of contaminants one wishes to remove from the water, the prices vary greatly. Bottled water is not really an alternative cost wise for the average family. It is expensive and is basically used for drinking only and often times the source is no better than your own. Some filters remove chlorine and fluoride only. That is not enough for my needs now. I prefer reverse osmosis. Although you have wash water and should get your minerals from another source, extremely filtered water at your source may be more important than ever at this point in time.

We cannot afford to depend on everyone else for our needs. Yes, I expect the supply of water to keep coming, but the job of keeping it healthy enough to clean out my system on a daily basis and free of contaminants I accept as my responsibility. I have heard repeatedly that our world has changed forever on Sept. 11 and my belief is that we need to take more personal responsibility and quit expecting everyone to do it for us. I am willing, Relax! it can be a good learning experience and an exercise of our independence.
