today's laugh

Northerner- "Pretty mild winters you have down here."
Southerner- "Mild! Do you call two feet of snow mild?"
Northerner- "Two feet! Say, man, the snow was so deep in our country last winter that the farmers had to jack up their cows to milk ‘em."

"Oh, George, you don’t expect me to wear this mangy fox fur all my life, do you?"
"Why not? The fox did."

AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE.

Crazy Man from Phelps County Made Trouble This Morning.

Sheriff Cooper of Phelps county had a very exciting experience this morning near the Arlington hotel, with Chas. Hampton, a crazy man whom he was taking from Rolla, Mo., to the asylum in Nevada.

They came in on the 10:20 train and as they could not make immediate connections the sheriff was taking his man to the hotel to rest between trains. When they reached the Arlington Hampton refused to enter the hotel, and although he was handcuffed fought the sheriff and a man by the name of Ward, and pushed north on Main street past the Home lumber office, where he was finally overpowered. A dray wagon was called and he was taken to the county jail. It is said that he went crazy over religion. He will be taken on to Nevada tonight.

Three Artists On Tap For Next Show!

by Robin Putnam, artCentral

We’re back ! Just took a short breather but we’re back now and ready to take on the rest of the art world !!

October 26th will be the opening for our next exhibit.

Actually, we are very excited to be having two separate exhibits !! One, as usual, downstairs and one upstairs in the Member’s Gallery !!

There will be three artists tolal.......Joe Leiter down-stairs and Bobbie Williams and Jake Evans upstairs.

Joe says he has worked out a new, different style and is eager to show it off. He enjoys painting "plein air" and his subject matter varies from florals and landscapes to impressionistic.

Jake Evans is a freshman at MSSC and was a graduate of Carthage High School. He has been awarded numerous scholarships and has shown over and over how talented he is !! For this exhibit he has gathered together a new crop of paintings !

Bobbie Williams is also a freashman at MSSC and a graduate of Carthage High School. He has taught sculpture at artCamp and been our teacher’s assistant.

He has been seen in and around our pottery room and is known to have a flair for sculpture !

This BIG event will be fun for all so be sure and mark your calendar for October 26th from 6pm-8pm. Be here !!

We’re pleased to say that one of our VERY talented members, Matt Myers, is busy painting a starry night mural on the ceiling of the ballroom high atop the Phelps House!!

The project will be going on for a while and we are all very eager to see it once completed !!

More......next week. 358-4404. 1110 E 13th www. ozarkartistscolony.com

Tues. - Sat 9am - 3pm.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin',

If ya take a look at the schedule of events for next week, you’ll find that a good portion are free to the public. Some good music is on tap at several of the events. ‘Course parade day is packed with free stuff too. You’d be hard pressed ta find another week with this much entertainment at such a low cost.

With the weather bein’ a little cool right now, the fact that all the presentations up to parade day will be held inside is a comfort. Hopefully the sun will shine on the 20th for the parade downtown and band contest at the Junior High.

Looks like we may get a good show from the Maple trees this year. A good chill for a couple a nights should really get ‘em turnin’. Should be onea those perfect Maple Leaf Celebrations.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

by Mari An Willis

We have discussed the usage of fats before, but let me reiterate that there are good fats and bad fats and you cannot maintain good health if you eliminate the good fats. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids function as necessary building blocks for the entire body. They also produce an important class of hormones called prostaglandins. These help regulate cholesterol levels, energy production, and a healthy immune system.

According to Dr. Michael Murphy, one can deplete theses essentials just by living in the environment of today. They are depleted by the use of caffeine, drugs (prescription), alcohol, stress, etc. He even makes the statement that with continued use of flax seed oil, one will eventually lose all unnecessary weight.

Some sources of the EFA’s are flax seed oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, pumpkin oil, borage oil and evening primrose oil. Flax seed is extremely high in Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid). The usage of flaxseed oil will eventually take care of most any dry skin condition and is very beneficial for the immune system and tissue inflammation. Sunflower is high in Omega-6 (linoleic acid) and is also rich in Vit E. It has been shown to be beneficial in circulatory problems. Pumpkin seed is historically used by both males and females for maintaining sexual health. Borage oil is also effective with skin conditions, allergies and PMS.

Do not cook with these oils. They are nutritionally more beneficial in the cold pressed form either taken encapsulated or in dressings: or for those who just "want to get it over with" straight from the spoon is not all that bad. Try a blend on a baked potato or cole slaw. The recommended dosage as stated by Mark Swanson, N. D. is six months to two years ... 1/2 teaspoon:

2 yrs. to 5 yrs. 1 tsp.

5 yrs. to 12 yrs. 1 - 2 tsps.

13 yrs. and up 3 - 4 tsps.

Pregnant, lactating mothers 3 - 6 tsp.
