BOY WITH A BUTCHER KNIFE.

Chased His Sister from Home and Cornered His Mother.

Marshal Drake was called to the corner of Garrison avenue and Limestone street last night about eight o’clock to arrest an incorrigible named Willie Tiller, the eleven-year-old son of Mrs. A. B. Roach.

The boy had a big butcher knife with which he had run his sister from the house and cornered his mother, refusing to allow her to leave the house. When Marshal Drake arrived he found the boy sullenly standing leaning against the cook stove near the door while his mother was backed up in the corner of the room afraid to try to pass out.

The marshal disarmed the boy and took him to the calaboose. Willie made no explanation of the warlike episode except to say that he had been whipped once during the day and did not propose to be whipped a second time. "Once a day is often enough to whip any boy," said he. He also announced to the officers with sober face and set lips that when he got free he would kill his sister and break his mother’s neck.

The case was turned over to Prosecuting Attorney Mooneyham, who issued a warrant this morning, and as a result Willie will probably be sent to the reform school.

The boy’s mother is the wife of A. B. Roach, the hackman who recently left town so unceremoniously and has not been heard from since. Her children are by a former husband.

PM Christmas Light On Friday.

Precious Moments will present its 13th Annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony this Friday, November 2.

"Thousands of twinkling lights will glimmer and brighten the paths and landscapes at the Precious Moments Chapel Center during the upcoming holiday season," according to Lynn Iliff Onstot, Public Relations Manager for the company.

Seating begins at 5 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 5:30 in the Fountain of Angels theater. The free program will include numerous holiday songs performed by several groups. The Precious Moments Singers will entertain the group, along with the Christ Church of Oronogo Choirs. The church choirs include both a children and adult choir under the direction of Russell Ball.

At the conclusion of the performance, guests will participate in the candle lighting service. As guests leave the theater, they will be greeted by the glow of hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights, which adorn the Precious Moments grounds. The Lighting Ceremony is a free event offered to the public to celebrate the Christmas season.

Mornin',

Rumors of Lujene Clark running against current Mayor Kenneth Johnson in the April election are gaining credibility.

Clark reportedly told members of the Peace Star ABWA she would in fact become the first woman to seek the office in Carthage. Although not an official declaration for candidacy, according to members present, there was little doubt that Clark will be a candidate. Clark had not yet been reached for comment as of Friday afternoon by this paper and no official new release was made available.

Clark has served on the City Council and as a volunteer in several community organizations.

Mayor Johnson announced some weeks ago that he will run for reelection.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Q: We just added a turbine on the roof for better insulation in the attic. It’s shiny and sticks out like a sore thumb. Can it be painted a more subdued color? - T. S.

A: It’s probably made of galvanized metal and should weather before it will readily accept paint. Rather than wait, bathe all the surfaces with vinegar. When dry, apply a zinc-based primer and then use any exterior topcoat you wish.

Hint - A simple and inexpensive furniture polish can be made from one part white vinegar and three parts olive oil. It does a super job and also makes a fantastic salad dressing!

Q: How do you replace a porch post that has rotted when the post is holding up the roof? - P. P.

A: You have to have something to temporarily hold up the roof. This could be a pair of 2 X 4’s nailed together long enough to reach from floor to roof, or an adjustable jack post, which can be rented. Whichever prop you decide on should be placed right next to the post to be removed.

Q: We wish to strip paint off the kitchen cabinets and get down to the natural wood. However, I’ve heard about lead-based paint being dangerous. How can we find out if this coating is involved? - R. G.

A: If your house was built after 1978, when lead in paint was outlawed, there should be no problem. There are test kits you can get at paint retailer stores.
