"On the whole, you are getting along famously," said the doctor. "Your left leg is swollen, but that does not bother me."
"By thunder!" ripped out the patient, "if yours were swollen that wouldn’t trouble me either!"
"Crop failures?" asked the old timer.

"Yes, I’ve seen a few in my day. In 1898 the corn crop was almost nothing. We cooked some for dinner, and my father ate fourteen acres of corn at one meal!"

Was an Excellent Show.

"In a Woman’s Power," last night at the Grand opera house is pronounced by those who attended, to have been a most worthy and excellent show. The leading character, she of the power, was especially fine. The audience was only fair-sized.

Murdered Girl Known Here.

With Charles Rogers of Neosho, the young man whom she told Prof. Croswell that she loved, she visited in Carthage one day several months ago and was the guest of Mrs. C. Roach and sister, Miss Gem Millard.

Square Tour Guide Available.

Main Street Carthage has new walking tour guides for the Carthage Square available. The twenty-four page publication uses over 50 pictures to document the various buildings that surround the historic courthouse.

The booklet was researched by Sue Vandergriff with design and layout by Harry Putnam. Mike Morgan provide the photography. Funding for the project was provided by the City of Carthage Lodging Tax.

The booklet is organized to allow a person to walk the area and read the history or unique aspects of each building as it is approached.

The goal of the booklet is to "celebrate the architectural heritage, promote its enjoyment, and to further encourage its restoration and revitalization."

Main Street Carthage is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The program emphasizes preserving the best of heritage while economically enhancing the downtown area.

For more information, contact the Main Street office located at 335 S. Main or call 358-4974.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Chad and I are going to make the trek across country and come home for a week or so. I don't want to pull Chad out of school for too long, but I really feel like I need to get out of this area for a while, and see friends and family.

I have always loved flying, and I'm sure I will do it again, but for this trip Chad and I are going to rent a car and go on a full fledged road trip. I think it will be good for us to have some time alone and I've missed driving. Maybe we will even stop at the liberty bell in Philadelphia. :-)

My goal is to leave Jersey on Saturday after Chad's soccer game and be in Tulsa by Monday night. I'm sure we will make a trip to Kansas, and Missouri while we are there, but I'm not making any definite plans yet...I will be in touch with everyone soon!

VantAge Point Computer Classes.

news release

The VantAge Point at Northpark Mall will be starting a series of computer classes this month.

Each Friday at 1:00 p.m. a Computer Awareness class will be held. This class provides a "road-map" to people who know nothing or very little about computers. Topics include what you can do with a computer, its components, and what to look for and know when buying a computer. It is a demonstration class, not hands-on.

On Fridays at 2:30 p.m. an Orientation to the Internet and E-Mail class is scheduled. This class targets those who have little or no previous experience. Topics include what is good about the internet and what is bad, how to protect yourself on-line, what the internet can do for you; and the basics about sending e-mail.

"Hands-on" Instruction is available to a limited number of people on Fridays at 10:00 a.m. This session is for those who have never used a computer or for those who have a computer, are somewhat able to use it, but need assistance with basic areas.

Pre-registration is required for these class sessions. Call (417) 627-0600 for more information.

Mornin',

How ‘bout them gas prices? Buck nineteen and fallin’. Seems ever’one piled up a little fuel and now are movin’ it along with the price comin’ down.

It’s odd to see cars lined up when the price is high and no cars sittin’ when the price is low.

I see where one station was fined a thousand bucks for makin’ an extra $44 in profit by jackin’ the price over $2.49. Just panic said the owner. Another one put $4 on the sign but didn’t change pump prices, just to try and discourage the long lines. Says it didn’t work.

I’m guessin’ most in these parts weren’t too takin’ in by the rumors. Those who patiently waited in the gas lines prob’ly gained a little sense of community.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Natural Nutrition

As fall gets into full swing, it is time to prepare the body for the changes in weather and eventual winter. A good winter wellness formula may contain all or some of the following herbs:

GARLIC - much research to document this bulb as an immune system builder, cholesterol fighter, and lymphatic stimulant.

BEE POLLEN - described as a detoxifier and health builder. It is said to have every chemical substance needed to maintain life. It has been used by those suffering from allergies, colds, and general weakness. It is a plant source of vitamin B 12.

ECHINACEA - echinacea augustifolia - well documented research shows that this native herb bolsers the immune system, is a potent blood cleanser and is effective against bacterial and viral infections.

MULLIEN LEAF - also a Missoura native, this wide leafed plant is a primary lung herb. It has also been shown to be effective with hard cough, inflammation of the throat and swollen lymph glands.

BONESET - one of my personal favorites for winter chills. Either in capsules or a tea, it is considered the best remedy for relief of flu symptoms. It induces sweating to combat muscle aches and pains and ridding the body of toxins.
