A man left a bony horse
on Main Street one Saturday, and, coming back a short
time afterward, discovered that someone had placed a
placard against the fleshless ribs bearing the notice,
"Oats wantedinquire
within."
Husband- "I suppose you only
married me because I had a little money."
Wife- "Paul, thats unfair. You know Id
have married you if youd had twice as much."

Today's Feature
Council Considerations.
The Carthage City Council will
meet for its regular meeting tomorrow evening at
7:30 in City Hall.
The agenda includes two Council
bills that are scheduled for second reading in
old business. Council bill 01-76 would authorize
an agreement with Phillips-Ward for the
preparation of an organizational plan for tourism
efforts. The $1,600 contract would be paid for
with Lodging Tax Funds.
Council bill 01-79 concerns the
annexation of property at 1605 Baker as requested
by the First Assembly of God Church.
New business includes a
scheduled discussion of a request by Shellie Ross
for the issuance of a liquor license for a
restaurant to be located at 207 W. Third. The
Public Safety Committee requested the discussion
after finding that a mission operates at 213
Lyon. A recent ordinance change requires a liquor
licence not to be issued if the location is
within 300 feet of a church or "place of
worship". The mission is about 185 feet from
the restaurant as measured from front door to
front door.
The Council will also be asked
to endorse an affordable housing development.

Talkin'
Mornin',
The Public Safety Committee
is still workin through some of the
less obvious ramifications of the ordinances
passed recently dealin with alcohol
sellin in the City.
One of the questions yet to
be answered it the situation where either a
business was already operatin when the
new 300 foot rule was passed, or where a
church moves into within 300 feet of an
established business. The question comes up
if the business either sells or shuts down.
The Committee seems ta be
leanin toward allowin the license
to be continued for up to a year to allow
time for the business to be sold. If the
license is not used for a year, the 300 foot
rule would take over. The discussion for this
question is scheduled for the next Public
Safety meeting.
This is some fact, but
mostly,

Q: How can we strengthen a
cracked rafter? There is no sag yet, but Id
like to be sure a problem doesnt occur. -
L. W.
A: Wed use "sister
rafters" to give the cracked piece a new
lease on life. Cut a pair of boards to be the
same width and thickness as the rafter. They
should be long enough to extend beyond the
cracked area by at least a foot. Sandwich the
damaged rafter between the two boards. Be sure to
use nails long enough to go through the rafter
and the first sister. Clinch the nails before
installing the other board.
Dear Al: I recently discovered
that if you hold a flashlight up close to a dark
wall made of plasterboard, you can see the small
bumps where the nails or screws are located along
the studs. Ive tried to locate studs for
different repairs around the house with a variety
of methods; this one works best. It wont
work on all walls, but it sure does work on most
of mine. Knowing where those studs are really
makes hanging shelves and other things a lot
easier. - D. W.
Super Hint - To keep paint can
spray nozzles from clogging, fill a small
container with solvent. Drop the nozzles into the
solvent for a few minutes. The nozzles will be
ready when you need them. If you keep a few extra
nozzles, youll have one ready if yours
should clog while you are using it.
