"But I didnt know he
even played the game."
"He doesnt. He sprained his larynx at the
match last Sunday."
The guide in Yellowstone Park, when
asked why he was lacking the first finger of his right
hand, answered:
"Ive been a guide, man and boy, for
twenty-five years, and I just naturally wore that finger
off pointing out places of interest to inquisitive
tourists."

The Carthage Planning, Zoning,
and Historic Preservation Comission is scheduled
to meet on Tuesday, February 19 at 5:30 p.m. in
City Hall. The Commission is scheduled to hear
two requests for certificates of appropiateness
for properties located within historic districts.
The City of Carthage is seeking
the approval of the Commission to demolish the
property located at 116-128 W. 3rd Street. The
City recently purchased the property from Larry
Allen after the property was condemned.
Richard and Kathleen Straight
are also seeking the Commissions
certification for an addition to property located
at 915 S. Maple.
City Code requires a
certificate of appropriateness for demoliton of
real property located within designated historic
districts.
The Code does allow for
numerous alterations of property within the
historic district that are clasified as
maintenance. Painting, siding, air conditioning,
roofing, replacement windows, and other
modifications are considered maintenance and
allowed without a certificate.

Talkin'
Mornin',
Political signs for the
upcomin City election on April 2 were
officially legal to be placed in yards last
Friday. The City allows such signs for a
period of 60 days before the election. They
can remain for only 5 days after the results.
With the mayoral race this
year, there should be more than the usual
number of political messages bein
placed this year.
I dont think the
number of signs for any particular candidate
necessarily is an accurate indicator of the
outcome of a race, but its always fun
to see whos supportin who.
Im always curious
when one yard has a sign for candidates that
oppose each other. I cant figure if
they property owner cant decide,
doesnt care, or just doesnt want
ta hurt anyones feelins. A true
politician.
This is some fact, but
mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

Q: I want to use a latex paint
over an oil-based paint but was told it
wouldnt work. Why? Is there another way, or
do I have to use oil-based paint? - H. J.
A: I think the reason people
mistakenly warn against putting latex over
oil-based paint is because of the old "water
and oil dont mix" adage. After the
paint is dry, its perfectly all right to
use latex over oil, or vice versa. You do want to
make sure that the old paint is clean and without
any gloss and that the surface is completely
sound. Talk with your paint dealer to be sure
youre using the proper paint for the
project.
Q: I want to add an electrical
outlet on my patio. Should I install a GFI? - J.
B.
A: Most local electrical codes
require that you employ ground-fault interrupters
any place where water and electricity might mix.
Even if its not required, it should be. So,
yes, use a GFI on your patio.
Super Hint - Sometimes a tiny
dowel can hold a joint better than a screw. Drill
a tiny hole and install a toothpick along with
glue to hold a joint fast.
Super Hint - If using
pre-pasted wallpaper and you dont have a
water tray, try wetting the paper in a large ice
chest. Make sure it is large enough to hold the
water and wide enough to accommodate the paper.
Benefits: The water will stay warm longer, and
ice chests are relatively easy to clean.
