Mammals are classified thus: man and lower animals. Of course, man does the classifying.

What were all your chickens doing out in front of your house?

They heard some men were going to lay a sidewalk and they wanted to see how it was done.

In Honor of His Birthday.

Sunday afternoon Horace Walden was given a pleasant surprise by his wife in honor of his 47th birthday. After church he was sent down town and upon his return found several friends had gathered at his home on McGregor street. A sumptuous dinner was served and several hours were spent in general conversation. The guests were Dr. and Mrs. J .W. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Durham, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Snyder and family and Mr. and Mrs. James Walden and family.

A. O. Ihlseng returned yesterday from his trip to Europe, where he and his wife have been traveling since the middle of February on a combined business and pleasure trip. Mrs. Ihlseng is now in New York visiting her parents and will remain there until the middle of May recuperating from the terrific voyage which they experienced on their return trip. The weather was almost unheard of, storm succeeding storm.

Carthage Turns Out To Vote.

A large turn out of Carthage R-9 School District voters indicated the community interest in the proposed school levy increase Tuesday. Just over 52% of the 5,279 votes cast were in favor of the sixty-seven cent increase. The increase needed a simple majority to pass.

Nearly as many votes were cast against the issue in the R-9 decision, 2,487, as turned out for the similar Webb City levy issue. Only 2,552 votes were cast in that district. The Webb City levy increase also passed, but with a larger margin, sixty percent in favor. Even Carl Junction, with only eleven precincts, turned out 2,659 voters. That district’s proposal was defeated with only forty-nine percent in favor.

Incumbent School Board member Debbie Baugh posted the largest number of votes for a regular term with 1,858 and Mark A Westhoff won the second seat available with a total of 1,428 votes.

Danny Lambeth won the one year unexpired term with a total of 1,243.

The only Council seat race was for the Fifth Ward. Former Council member Bill Johnson defeated incumbent Bill Welch.

Mornin'

If you got out and voted yesterday, you can see it made a difference. Only two hunderd and fifty votes decided the school levy issue. ‘Course if ya like to play the numbers some, if a hunderd and twenty-six folks had voted the other way, the issue would have failed.

In reference to the front page story concernin’ the low turn out in Webb City, I have ta note that they have 17 precincts compared to 19 for the R-9 District. Carl Junction only has 11. Looks like Carthage just has a higher percentage of folks willin’ to get out to the polls and express their feelin’s.

It was a good showin’ of the community and should be noted by the new school board that a lotta folks are watchin’. Hopefully the increase in fundin’ will be used wisely.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• Did you know that sugar makes an excellent facial scrub?

Put about a teaspoon of regular sugar in your palm, wet and rub gently into your skin. Keep an airtight jar of sugar on the vanity for weekly use.

• "I always had trouble with determining if multi-item sales were a good deal or not — five for $4, six for $5, etc. So, I made a little chart on the inside cover of my coupon holder of commonly priced sales and what the individual items worked out to. This way, I can decide if I really need to buy several items or if one or two would be just as cost-efficient." — Emily F., via e-mail

• Photographs can be priceless memories, but sometimes having too many can be overwhelming.

Limit your photo albums to one or two per year at the most, and only store the best. The extra pictures can make wonderful postcards or can be given to extended family members.

• "My neighbor and I decided to share the cost of renting an aerator for our lawn last spring. We each had it for half a day, and decided to help out one another with lawn work. In fact, we have started to take one day every other week and do yard work together. We do one yard in the morning and another in the afternoon, and have lunch together in between. It makes it so much more pleasant, and we have the best-looking yards in the neighborhood." — Ron McC. in Edinburgh, Pa.

• "After twice getting caught without an umbrella in an unexpected shower, I decided to purchase several pocket umbrellas. I stash one in each car — where they stay — and one by each door of the house. I also keep one at work. This way, there is always an umbrella wherever I need one." — Pauline D., via e-mail
