today's laugh
"Mother, how much
do people pay a pound for babies?"
"Babies are not sold by the
pound, darling."
"Then why do they always weigh them as soon as they
are born?"
Guide - "This, sir, is the leaning
tower of Pisa."
Tourist - "Pisa! Let me think. No, that doesnt
sound like the contractors name who built my
garage, but it looks like his work."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
AN
ENJOYABLE RECITAL.
The harp recital given at the
Congregational church last night under the auspices of
the St. Catherines Guild of the Episcopal church,
was one of the best that has been given in this city. The
numbers rendered by the harpist, Frances Hughes Wade,
were fine and a critic, whose authority has weight says
that she has the distinction of being the only concert
harpist that ever appeared in Carthage. G. Rawson Wade,
the baritone soloist, was well received. Mrs. J. T.
Wallace of this city was the accompanist. The audience
was not large and the Guild will not add greatly to the
organ fund, the purpose for which the event was given.
Bicycle Thefts
Galore.
Eight bicycles were stolen in Joplin
last night, all within a block of the corner of Fourth
and Main streets, and all at about the same hour.

Today's Feature Hospital Hearts.
The campaign to raise funds
needed for the expansion and new facility for
McCune Brooks Hospital has not officially began.
However, McCune Brooks employee Linda Houck
reported that the $362 raised by hospital
employees from the sale of Valentine hearts was
the first donation to the new hospital fund.
"Its a fun thing we
do every year," said Houck. "This year
we decided to donate the money to the new
hospital."
Houck stated that the
fund-raising for the new hospital is going to be
managed by the Capitol Campaign and campaign
Chairperson Beth Simmons.
McCune Brooks Hospital CEO Bob
Copeland reported earlier that building a new
hospital would cost approximately $23.6 million.
Copeland also stated that fund-raising would come
mostly from grants and federally back bonds.
The 50 acres located on the
southwest corner of HH and 71 Highways is to
serve as the future site for McCune Brooks
Hospital. The land was acquired in December by
the Hospitals Foundation Board from
Precious Moments for $1.5 million.

Mornin',Growin up
we always had a dog around. Betsy was a Collie
that was scared to death of thunder storms.
Shed hide behind the curtains under the
kitchen sink. Shed also have
"fits" ever now and then and just
lay down and shake. At the time I had no idea
what epilepsy was and didnt realize until
years later that was the reason for this strange
behavior.
After Betsy came Smokey who was
supposed ta be a Collie but never grew into the
part. She started her stay by relievin
herself under the Christmas tree where she was
placed by Santa. Bein an outside dog, as
she matured she began chasin a phantom
intruder whenever wed pull in the driveway.
Shed run just to the edge of the yard and
then come to the car for congratulations.
The Great Dane is another
story.
This is some fact, but mostly,

HERES A
TIP
By JoAnn Derson
"To help moisten
really dry feet, slather on lotion, wrap feet in
Saran wrap, then slip on some socks overnight
or for as long as you can stand it."

"I used to change
my cats litter inside, and we always seemed
to have this fine white dust on our furniture. My
husband theorized that maybe it was coming from
the litter and suggested that I start changing
the litter outside on the porch. Since Ive
been doing this, Ive found that I
dont have to dust as often, and the fine
white powder is gone." Maggie via

"Each Christmas, I
save all the wrapping paper from the presents
people give me, and use it to wrap gifts the next
Christmas. During the rest of the year, I use
shopping bags turned inside out and decorate the
outsides with flowers and other drawings, or
sometimes wrap things in leftover fabric. I try
to reuse and recycle at every turn."

"My 10-year-old was
spending lots of time saying she was studying and
doing homework, but her grades were down, and I
suspected she spent much of that time
procrastinating and daydreaming. I started
restricting the amount of time she spends
studying on each subject, and when she is done,
we spend about 15 minutes reviewing together. She
explains the subject matter to me, and it seems
to help her retain the information. The bonus is
that this review time has spilled over into
actual conversation about what she is up to
outside of class." Christine B. in
Front Royal, Va.
I store my extra sheets
in a storage box under the bed they go with. On
the lid of the box, I write the dates when the
mattress needs to be flipped. This way I never
forget how long it has been." Warren
in Fayetteville, Ark.
