INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Miner’s House Burned.

D. M. Stafford reports the burning of a house on the Porto Rico tract near Prosperity yesterday afternoon about 3 o’clock. It belonged to Messrs. Lee and Moore, who were keeping batch in the house.

At the time of the fire they were at work in a shaft close by and knew nothing about the fire till it was all over with. Everything they had except the clothes they had on was burned. Moore lost $28.60 in cash. The fire is supposed to have originated from an oil stove.

A man named Wilson, of Chicago has rented the vacant room in the Regan block north of Brinkley’s hardware store and will occupy it about August 1st with a stock of confections etc. He is said to be an experienced candy maker. After a visit to all the towns in the southwest he decided he liked Carthage best and so located here.

Public Safety Commission.

The Carthage Public Safety Committee met on Monday July 19 at 6:30. The agenda included two draft ordinances presented by Police Chief Dennis Veach.

The first ordinance would make the activity of stopping cars at intersections to ask for money illegal. The fire department had previously decided to discontinue their "boot block", where fire-personnel collected funds at intersections using a fire-boot for a receptacle, in favor of a different kind of fund-raiser.

The second ordinance concerned failure to return rental property. Veach told the committee that the main reason for the ordinance was to enable city enforcement. Currently the city has to use State statutes for enforcement which slows the process. A motion was approved to bring both of these ordinances before the Council.

Further concerns at the meeting included the approach of Marian Days which will be held from August 5 to 8 and the number of complaint calls about the emission of odors from R.E.S. over the weekend.

Mornin'

The kids nowadays don’t know the meanin’ of bein’ cool. I’m talkin’ real cool, as in temperature, not attitude. The tricks of beatin’ the hot weather that were old standby’s are not bein’ transferred to the younger generation ‘cause it’s easy ta just flip a switch and get air conditionin’.

The best coolin’ off place growin’ up was the farm pond, mainly ‘cause it was handy after a day in the field. In town the water hose was always a good cooler for the younger kids. Takin’ turns sprayin’ each other, slidin’ on the grass, slipin’ on the sidewalk. There seemed ta be somethin’ daring about runnin’ through the spray of water, it just wasn’t the same ta just stand and get soaked.

Inside fans made a lot a sense. And open windows in the evenin’ with June bugs bumpin’ into the screens. Cool man.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• "When I diet, I use everything mini. I use a small salad plate, a dessert fork and a teaspoon. And I even snack on mini candy bars when I need a treat. I also divide dinner into appropriate portions before serving, so that I know what it means to go back for seconds. (I used to get just one more taste before I put leftovers away; turns out that ‘taste’ was a whole second portion!)" — Janice K. in Portland, Ore.

• "My toddlers were always getting into the video tapes on our entertainment-center shelves. I found that photo boxes hold videos perfectly, and I added a little strip of Velcro on either end to keep them closed. They are not nearly as tempting as they once were." — A reader via e-mail

• "I cut the sleeves off of old T-shirts for my granddaughters to wear as art smocks. My husband thought of that idea!" — E.U. from Virginia

• Firm cucumbers can be stored for up to two weeks in your refrigerator crisper drawer. Take them out of any plastic bags.

• To make your own cinnamon butter, just combine a tablespoon of softened butter, a half-teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Try brown sugar for a sweeter treat. Spread on toast and enjoy.

• Best moneysaving fashion advice? Don’t be afraid to spend good money on quality, timeless pieces. Neutral-colored blazers and simple skirts and pants can be staples in every woman’s wardrobe. Buy changing fashion trend pieces at discount stores or at mass marketers. They will only last for a season or two.

• Another fashion tip: "If you find an item of clothing that fits well, and you like it and wear it a lot, don’t be afraid to go back and buy multiples of it before it is sold out or replaced. Stores change fashions so quickly that the perfect pair of jeans might be sold for only a few months before it is replaced by a new style." — Jacob B. in Middleburg, Fla.
