Remember this before you burden other people with your troubles. Half of them aren’t the least bit interested, and the rest are delighted that you’re getting what they think is coming to you.

CONFESSED TO STEALING.

Two small boys named Guy Courtney and Gus Hohn, were arraigned before Justice Barton yesterday and answered to the charge of stealing from a Frisco box car. They were each given 20 days in the county jail and considered the sentence light.

During the course of the investigation the boys told the whole story of the affair and implicated seven other labs about town in the crime. Other arrests will likely follow. The culprits said they with seven other boys, chanced to be near the Frisco depot one night some time ago when they saw several hobos emerge from an open car carrying bundles of something. After they had gone the boys say they went over to see what was in the car and found hundreds of suits of summer underwear scattered about the floor.

The each took three suits apiece. Afterwards one of the boys gave the secret away and Assistant Chief of Police Drake located most of the missing goods.

Floodplains Revision.

The Carthage City Council will meet tonight at 7:00 P.M. in Council Chambers in City Hall. Their agenda includes first readings for five new Council Bills

The Floodplain Management Ordinance is a State requirement that decides the regulations for building in a floodplain region. Federal Government provides the outline of the ordinance, and the map documenting the route of the floodplain.

Two of the proposed Council bills were previously discussed at the Public Safety Committee meeting on July 19. One of these would make the failure to return rental property a matter of city enforcement, quickening the process. The other would make soliciting in the roadway illegal.

Council will also discuss the bill authorizing a contract between Sprenkle & Associates and the City for the design of new sidewalks for the Carthage downtown area.

Another bill if passed would allow a contribution from Missouri Department of Transportation towards the Carthage taxi and City bus.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Exercise Used to Treat Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My doctor has given me a provisional diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. He is running more tests. Which one tells if I have this illness, and how is it treated? — B.B.

ANSWER: Chronic fatigue syndrome is an illness in search of a cause and of a diagnostic test. Currently no cause has been found, and no test establishes the diagnosis. The tests your doctor is running are to exclude other illnesses that cause profound tiredness — illnesses that include a sluggish thyroid gland, diabetes, lupus, anemia and adrenal gland malfunctions. Depression is another consideration.

Although there are no tests for this elusive illness, there are guidelines that make its diagnosis possible. The definition of fatigue is a feeling of total exhaustion not relieved by sleep or rest. Fatigue must be present for six months, and it must be of such magnitude that it has forced people to reduce their customary workload and their social lives.

In addition to fatigue, four of the following signs and symptoms have to be present to put the diagnosis on firm ground. A diminution of memory and concentration is an important element. Sore throat, at some stage, is often part of the picture. Lymph nodes in the neck and under the arms might be enlarged and tender. Muscles can ache, as can joints. Physical exercise leaves CFS patients completely spent.
