today's
laugh
As the boat was sinking. the captain lifted his
voice to ask:
"Does anyone know how to pray?"
One man spoke confidently in answer:
"Yes, Captain, I do."
"Thats all right then," he
declared. "You go ahead and pray. The rest
of us will put on life belts. Theyre one
short."
Guide- "This, sir, is the
leaning tower of Pisa."
Tourist- "Pisa! Let me think. No that
doesnt sound like the contractors
name who built my garage, but it looks like his
work."

Today's Feature
Public
Service Meeting.
Carthage Public Service
Committee will hold a meeting Thursday, July 8 at
5:00 P.M.. On the agenda is the Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) sidewalk project,
discussing the Central Park fountain and the top
dresser, which lays sand on golf course. The
Committee also plan on discussing the agreement
with Carthage Soccer League for the 2004-2005
season.
After taking bids for the
Central Park fountain the City is going back to
their plans and seeing if any cut backs can be
made. According to Park and Recreations Director
Alan Bull City engineers estimated repairs at
around $32,000 which is what was collected in
donations. However with the bidding closed the
amounts have almost tripled to $85,000 - $90,000.
Bull says they will have to go back and see what
can be cut back and then reopen bids.
"Thats the bad thing
about fountains. They are great when you have the
funds, but we just dont have (funds),"
remarks Council Member Jim Woestman.
Woestman believes the City will
have to look at getting a grant, whether private
or state, to help make up the difference in
price.

Talkin'
Mornin'
I got ta wonderin
why old songs on the car radio
didnt sound quite the same as I
remembered. Seemed there was just more
goin on than there used ta be. I
unhooked all speakers cept the one
on the dash. Tuned in to the local AM
station and there it was. Real old time
music. The fact is the music was always
there, ya just couldnt hear it on a
mono radio with a single speaker.
Id say that the
broadcasts are a lot better now, but at
least you can get that flat, scratchy
sound if ya really work at it.
Now I dont
suppose anyone would make an honest
attempt to argue that hearin music
in that limited manner is
"better" than with full
acoustic surround sound technology, but
to me, it is more pleasurable for certain
types of music.Thats just the way I
remember hearin it, dont ya
know. No wonder Im always a little
out of step.
This is some fact, but
mostly,

HERES A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
"Its peach
season, and I love juicy peaches. I wanted to
take a nice, ripe one to work, so I wrapped it in
some bubble packaging that I had lying around. It
made it to work totally unscathed."
B.M. in Orlando, Fla.
"Whenever I have to
do a lot of shopping at different places or have
errands to run, I stick laundry baskets in my
trunk. It helps to keep things organized back
there, and they are easily transported back into
the house." E-mail from Texas
"When I go to the
market, I always have the baggers put all the
cold stuff into paper bags, separate from the
items that do not need refrigeration. This has
helped me out several times when it was raining
when I got home. I just brought in the cold
stuff, and when it stopped raining, the other
items were safe in the car. I didnt have to
worry about bringing it all in, since all the
cold stuff came in first." A.F. in
Long Beach, Calif.
"To get my toddler
to brush his teeth, I bought a digital timer. We
set it for two minutes and its off to the
races. He brushes each quarter of his mouth for
30 seconds, so he has to pay attention. He seems
to like it, anyway." A mom in
Brooklyn, N.Y.
"I dont have
air conditioning in my car, and it is hot on the
drive home from work. I have started bringing two
or three washcloths in a plastic bag to work.
About an hour before Im due to leave, I wet
the washcloths and put them in the freezer at
work. Then I just pick them up as I am leaving.
They are nice and refreshing, and they help to
keep me cool when traffic is stopped. I put them
on my neck or just mop my brow." T.R.
in St. Louis, Mo.
