It was dawn. The morning was bitter cold and ugly. The hunters waited in their blind, their hands blue even under their gloves and their teeth chattering. Finally, one hunter stood up and said, "I don’t think I can take much more of this fun."

Hotels ask you to be out by noon. How come the room isn’t ready when you check in at 7:00 p.m.?

Carthage Relay For Life.

news release

In a nation where more than one million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, Carthage is invited to celebrate life.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event in which teams of participants take turns walking or running the track in an effort to fight cancer. Teams campout, eat, and play games. This year’s Relay For Life will take place under the City water tower at the girls’ softball fields of the YMCA, kicking off on June 4th.

The message of the event is cancer can be conquered. This theme of hope is ignited as the ceremony begins with a cancer survivors’ lap at 7:00 p.m. This emotional lap honors the courage of all who have defeated cancer. Each survivor is introduced, and then all will walk, run or wheel chair the opening lap — unified in victory and in hope.

If you are a cancer survivor and would like to take part in the Relay For Life of Carthage, please call Lisa Olds, Community Specialist of Income Development with the American Cancer Society at 417-627-7516, or Connie Leek at 358-4408 or 358-8131 ext. 3340.

Of the numerous examples attributed under the general term of "Murphy’s Law" the most tellin’ to me is the one that says "the odds of a piece of jellied bread landin’ jelly down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet."

My recollection of Murphy’s wisdom is somethin’ like this - In anything you do, it will always take longer than you expect, cost more than you expect, and if anything can go wrong it will, at the worst possible time.

When stuff happens that is out of your control, it’s usually best to try and roll with the punches a little and try to at least maintain control of yourself. The trick in all a this is bein’ able to recognize what you can and can’t influence and accept it. For some reason we humans want to think we can control ever’thing. But as Murphy says, if it can happen, it will.

This is some fact, but mostly,

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• "When a recipe calls for chilled butter cut into bits, an easy way to get it into bits is to grate it. Use the larger holes of a grater, and keep the wrapper on so you can hold onto that and your fingers won’t melt the butter. Quick and easy!" — Megan M. in Orlando, Fla.

• "Don’t automatically toss glass jars into the recycling bin. Baby-food jars (emptied and cleaned) make great containers for small screws, nails, hardware, etc. Jelly jars and similar containers can hold larger items. We turned a large plastic pretzel container into a container for tape rolls and various oddly shaped shop items. Every little bit helps when trying to get organized." — Adam via e-mail

• "My diaper pail started to really stink, so I tried a fabric softener sheet. I didn’t have much luck with that, so I improvised. I have some scented oils that are like perfume but are heavier. I put a small amount on a cotton ball and dropped it in the garbage bag inside the diaper pail. It works really well. I just replace it every time I change the bag." — Jenee in Memphis, Tenn.

• Speaking of fabric softener sheets, stuff one or two inside the new bag when you replace your vacuum bag. The smell will be distributed throughout the house each time you vacuum.

• "I went to a brunch last weekend, and the hostess had little bowls of lemon slices sitting in water near a big bowl of shrimp. It was so nice, because your fingers can smell like seafood after eating shrimp, and the bowls were easily placed for finger wiping. She had a pretty towelette next to each bowl for drying. I was so impressed, I have been telling everybody." — Meline in Dallas

• When folding and storing sheet sets, wash and fold together. This way, your sheets have the same amount of wear, and will be all together when it is time to change the linens.
