Visitor - "What became of that other windmill that was here last year?"
Farmer - "There was only enough wind for one, so we took it down."

KNIGHTS TO MONETT THURSDAY.

The district convention of the Knights of Pythias will be held in Monett Friday and about 50 of the local Pythians, including the drill team are preparing to attend, also a number of the Rathbone Sisters. Several of the members will leave here on the Frisco morning train Friday, but most of them will go at 4:10 in the afternoon and return on a train leaving Monett at 10:50, arriving home at 11:54.

A feature of the meeting of especial interest to the Carthaginians will be the annual contest for the loving cup participated in by all the drill teams of the district. Last year the Carthage team won the cup in Joplin at the annual convention and have had it on exhibition at the lodge room since. Now they must take it to Monett and compete for it along with the other teams.

Development Proceeds - Rates Delayed.

Council member Jim Woestman called the City Council meeting to order Tuesday evening in the absence of Mayor Johnson. This was Woestman’s first public execution of his role as Mayor Pro Tem since he was elected to the post by the Council in April.

The Mayor Pro Tem does conduct the meeting in the Mayor’s absence, but still retains the right to vote as usual. Members Bill Johnson and Bill Stearnes were also absent.

The Council voted to allow City staff to "proceed with negotiations" with Gross and Associates to develop incentives for the developer for the proposed development on the east side of 71 Highway just south of HH. Initial discussions include an arrangement where the City and the developer split any increase in new sales tax with the developer’s portion to be used to recoup infrastructure costs.

The Council also vote 7-1, with Ronnie Wells against, removing the emergency language for the proposed increase in base wastewater fees. Wells questioned the basis for the raise altogether and didn’t want the bill to go to a second reading.

Mornin'

I see the idea of equal opportunity has been approached again durin’ the last Public Safety meeting. The question of why dogs and not cats raised it’s cute little head again.

Durin’ the last dog/cat discussion, that lasted a year or two if I’m rememberin’ correctly, this question was often brought up. Dog owners used the idea as a deterrent to any leash laws, and cat owners defended their pets independence. Studies were waved in committee meetings showin’ that cats just can’t be expected to be tied down and others countered that dogs should be on at least equal footing with their feline friends.

What I think it boiled down to was ya just can’t catch a cat. Enforcement of a cat leash law would be impossible. Cats do now have ta register and get tags like dogs, but so do the rest of us.

This is some fact, but mostly,

TALK CARS

By Tom & Ray Magliozzi

Dear Tom and Ray:

I’m having a problem that just started recently. When I start the car, it takes a while for the engine to warm up. If I sit there, eventually the temperature gauge will go up to normal. But once I start driving, it goes back down to "cold," and cold air comes out of the heater. Turning the heat on causes the engine temperature to drop even faster. It is freezing in the car! I took out the thermostat and tested it, and it is working properly. I changed the heater core, too, and the water pump is new. Can you tell me what else I can look for or test? – Joe

TOM: Well, look for that thermostat that you tested and then reinstalled. Because that’s what’s causing your problem.

RAY: I agree. You can test a thermostat by putting it in a pan of water and heating it up. You use a thermometer to see at what temperature the thermostat closes and opens up, and then you match that to the thermostat’s ratings. And I take it yours passed the test.

TOM: But thermostats are finicky. They can work intermittently. And they can be "lazy," and open or close only some of the time. Besides, since the average thermostat costs eight bucks, we ALWAYS replace the thermostat first if the symptoms point in that direction.

RAY: Your symptoms are pointing in that direction, and jumping up and down with a neon arrow, Joe. They’re textbook. Your thermostat is stuck in the open position, and it’s never letting the engine get up to operating temperature.

TOM: So your coolant is always circulating through the radiator. And when you drive, cold air blows across the radiator and cools it off even more.
