A woman with a half-dozen kids goes to a movie. There, the kids make a terrible racket, talking, jumping up and down, throwing things. A man sitting behind them says, "Madam, you should have left half your kids home."

She says, "I did."

HUNDREDS FROM ONE PLACE.

Kansas German Baptists Coming In Numbers to Carthage.

Jeff Paul, salesman for a harvester company, came in yesterday from a trip through Kansas. He says in one German Baptist community they all were planning to visit Carthage this month to attend the national gathering.

"There will be hundreds of them from Kansas," said Mr. Paul. "If they turn out from other states like they say they are going to from Kansas, Carthage can’t hold the crowd. With those people the annual meeting is of far more importance than the world’s fair."

A. A. Ramsay left this morning for Guthrie, Okla., and Mrs. Ramsay for Springfield, Mo., both to be gone several days.

Just Jake Talkin'

Mornin'

A guy I was talkin’ to the other day said he had just doubled the value of his vehicle, he filled up.

Onea the upsettin’ circumstances arisin’ from the high gas prices is how hard it is to stop on just a dollar’s worth. ‘Course nowadays I’m doubtin’ that anyone would consider a dollar’s worth as bein’ worth stoppin’ for. But let’s say ya wanna stop on thirty or forty dollars worth. The dang dollars are racin’ by so fast ya can’t time it to shut off on an even number. Even tryin’ to bump the handle to squeeze in that last two cents is near impossible. Just a little squeeze spurts out a nickel or so.

The good side is you don’t have ta worry ‘bout a pocket of change wearin’ a hole in your pocket. But then, they say change is good.

This is some fact, but mostly,

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a senior citizen interested in starting an exercise program but not sure of how to go about it. I plan to begin walking daily. If I strap weights to my ankles, how much more benefit do I get from walking? — S.W.

ANSWER: Many exercise specialists are not keen on strapping on ankle weights, because they can throw a person’s stride off and stress knees and hips.

You can get a greater workout by holding hand weights. Keep your elbows bent 90 degrees and swing your arms so the forward hand rises as high as the breastbone and the backward swing rises to a level where the upper arm is parallel to the ground. Not only will you burn more calories, but you will be getting muscle exercise for the arms and shoulders, and you will be building stronger bones. Start with a light weight, one pound.

You say you are a senior. I have to give you the warning I give all seniors who begin an exercise program. It can be dangerous to plunge into such a program without first seeing your doctor.

The aerobics pamphlet outlines a typical program for people of all ages. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1301W, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
