Construction Progress.

Public Works Director Craig Menees spoke to the Mornin’ Mail and stated that construction progress at the Over 60 Center is going well.

"Last week," said Menees, "the concrete slab was poured, the sidewalk was finished and the parking area will be completed soon."

Menees stated that the metal building is due to arrive June 4th. He explained that the building is engineered and pre cut to the specific lengths before it arrives.

"The bolts are already cast into the slab," said Menees. "When the building arrives, they put it together. The outside of the building will look complete, while work is going on inside. The internal activities is what takes sometime to complete."

Over 60 Center Director Scott Teaford reported earlier that the First Christian Church Lighthouse at 800 South Main will be their temporary location for eight to ten weeks tentatively beginning June 21st.

"We’re looking at the end of August," said Teaford, "for the construction to be completed. If everything goes accordingly, we hope to be in the first of September."

Mornin'

I was sortin’ through over the weekend and happened to find the four or five Ted Williams baseball cards that remain from my childhood collection.

At one time I had close to all of the Williams cards. That is until a former relative saw that ad offerin’ to buy baseball cards. I got home from work one day and was gleefully presented with a ten dollar bill. I was supposed ta be happy that the guy paid a nickel a card for my collection.

I hadn’t thought of that situation for several years. I don’t know how these remainin’ cards escaped the sell-off, but I almost wish they had gone the way of the rest. They now just act as a reminder.

No, they ain’t for sale for a nickel. They prob’ly aren’t worth a lot, but they do have some pleasant memories attached.

This is some fact, but mostly,

HERE’S A TIP

By JoAnn Derson

• "When I roast a chicken and I am not using any stuffing, I put a whole apple inside the chicken.

I have used this method for many years, and my roast chicken always comes out moist and delicious." — Ms. H.W. in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

• Here’s a great way to remember who got what at birthday parties, wedding showers or baby showers: Take a Polaroid picture of the recipient with the gifts as they are unwrapped.

The guest of honor can then tuck it into the card, or you can write the gift-giver’s name on the front with a permanent marker. The Polaroid then makes a nice addition to the thank-you card.

• "My best summer road-trip tip is to get a book on tape. It really seems to make the trip shorter." — Maribel G. in Miami

• Here’s a tip to reduce your summer lawn-mowing time: Plant low-maintenance shrubs along the perimeter of your yard, thereby reducing the grassy area while still maintaining a polished landscaping look.

• Double-duty for popcorn: Tuck a few microwave popcorn bags into the freezer. It will keep them fresh longer, and in a pinch, the plastic wrap can be removed for an instant icepack.

• Hard-boiled eggs keep longer if they are left in their shells. But, how to distinguish between cooked and raw eggs? Boil your hard-boiled eggs in tinted water.

Slip a few drops of food coloring into the water before boiling, and the shells will be lightly tinted. You could also write the date the eggs were cooked on the shell in crayon.

• "When I am cutting a pineapple, I use my oven mitts to protect my hands from its prickly skin. It makes the pineapple easier to hold, too, since I can apply pressure." — A reader via e-mail
