today's laugh

Alma: "I think Arthurs is horrid. I asked him if he had to choose between me and a million dollars which he would choose and he said he’d take the million."
Amelia: "That’s all right. He probably knew that if he had the million, you’d be easy."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

A Stranded Wreck.

One of those unfornutate women whose lives have been wrecked by liquor came to Carthage last night and was locked up by Marshal Stafford this morning. She is a gray-haired woman with fairly good clothes, but her language betrays familiarity with jails.

She was run out of Joplin where she was three times arrested for drunkensne4ss. Her face shows a life of dissipation and the depravity of her mind would give a philanthropist little hope for her future. Shey says her home is in Kansas City, where she claijms to have well-to-do, but not wealthy relatives. She cried when she spoke of this.

It’s never still a minute,
Works with all its might,
Makes people well and happy,
Rocky Mountain Tea taken at night.

Suicide Prevention Training.

News release

From 1998 through 2002 there were 102 completeed suicides in Jasper and Newton Counties. In 2003 alone, there were 16 completed suicides in Jasper County, including 2 murder/suicides, and 8 completed suicides in Newton County. In 2004 suicide has already taken the lives of many local youths and adults. Sadly, our numbers rank our rural area among the highest rates in Missouri. This serious problem indicates professionals and citizens, alike, need suicide prevention training.

QPR is a method to enhance suicide prevention by raising awareness about youth, adult, and elderly suicide, and by acquuiring 3 basic intervention skills. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. QPR stands for Question a person about suicide, Persuade someone to get help and, Refer someone to the appropriate source.

A free QPR Suicide Prevention Training will be held October 4, 2004 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Carthage High School Auditorium.

Carthage Caring Communities, Carthage R-9 School District, NAMI of Joplin, and Southwest Missouir Community Alliance invite you to attend free QPR Training, presented by Todd Daniel from the Burrell Behavioral Mental Health Center.

Those around us are the ones most likely to assist us in a crisis of suicidal proportion and this fact cannot be overemphasized. This concept lies at the heart of the QPR community-based model and method of suicide prevention.

Learn what to look for and what steps to take to prevent suicide in your community, your school, your church, your workplace,... you may save a life.

Mornin'

I always have the urge to stop and take a look when I see somethin’ that looks like it blew out of a pickup along the road. I don’t recall ever actually stoppiun’, but I always think I ought to.

I saw what appeared to be a mattress the other day, but as I drove by, rubberneckin’ all the way, it looked more like a chunk of insulation or somethin’. Nothin’ I wanted, but I still thought about stoppin’ to check it out.

I suppose ever’one is curious about the possibility of findin’ some hidden treasure layin’ in the ditch, or in their attic or at a garage sale.

The fact is, usually, another man’s junk is just that.

This is some fact, but mostly,

What is bee pollen?

Pollen is the male germ of flowering plants. Honeybees collect pollen from the flowers, mix it with enzymes and nectar and that makes bee pollen. The principal food of bees, second only to honey, bee pollen has been used by various civilizations for centuries. Bee pollen is a complete protein containing 18 amino acids, plus it provides more than a dozen vitamins, over 20 minerals, 11 enzymes or coenzymes, 14 fatty acids, and is 25% protein by weight. It also acts as a catalyst for absorption of other nutrients. Studies have shown that orally ingested pollen passes directly from the stomach into the bloodstream where it is progressively broken down to nourish the body.

From my past experiences, it has run the gammet of fads from dieting to allergies and seems to have done quite well in all areas. Of course, if one is allergic to bee sting, you should not use bee products until you have gradually checked them out or consult your Dr. as to whether you should consume them. The hectic college years are often the time when students recognize the quick energy which pollen gives. Proteins are brain food and bee pollen is high in protein and a non-fattening food!
