today's laugh

A man went to his doctor to find out the results of a series of tests he’d been given the previous week. Unfortunately, his worst fears were confirmed.
"I’m afraid I have some rather bad news for you," his doctor began. "You’re going to die in four weeks."
Naturally, the man was distraught. "Doctor that’s terrible! I want a second opinion."
"Okay, you’re also ugly."

Missouri Won the Only Gold Medal.

The highest prize and the only gold medal awarded any law school at the Louisiana Purchase exposition was won by the law department of the University of Missouri on a collection of books written by the faculty, graduates and students from 1872 to 1904. No less than 30 treatises, nearly all of them standard authorities in the courts, were in the collection, besides digests, collection of cases, essays and encyclopedia articles on legal subjects.

Some of the more important works in the exhibit are Bliss on Code Pleading, Hale on Torts, Martin on Civil Procedure, Thompson’s Corporation and Lawson’s Rights, Remedies and Practice in eight volumes. Philemon Bliss was dean of the department from 1872 to 1889; William B. Hale graduated in 1890; Alexander Martin was dean from 1889 to 1902; Seymour D. Thompson was professor of law from 1880 to 1889; John D. Lawson is the present dean.

"I’ve been a knowin’ him for some time now," I heard on occasion growin’ up. That was usually followed by some judgement of the value of that relationship.

One measurement that could alter the assessment was if the person speakin’ had "had dealin’s" with the character bein’ discussed. Especially financial dealin’s or a dispute concernin’ a family pet. Nothin’ tests a relationship like a disagreement over a dog or cat’s territory or anything involvin’ money.

One fella I know hit a neighbors plow horse with his truck. By the time they settled up the horse became a champion quarter horse worth over two thousand dollars. At the time that was more than a new truck cost. Good thing the horse owner’s prize coon dog wasn’t in the mix. No amount of money coulda patched up that combination.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• "I attached an empty tin can to a wood post that is very close to my back door. I drilled a few holes in the bottom to let out any water that might collect. I keep a bottle of spray-on insect repellent in the can. Since I have to pass it to go out in the backyard, I always remember to put on repellent." — F.E. in Alabama

• "When cutting an onion, plug your nose and breathe through your mouth. Your eyes won’t water. I don’t know why this works, but it does." — B.M. in New York

• "I make my own convenient glass-cleaner sheets by tearing off several paper towels and placing them in a large zip-lock bag. I spray a generous amount of glass cleaner in the bag and store one in each bathroom. It saves time and keeps things cleaner on a day-to-day basis." — R.F. in Indiana

• "Got bugs? This tip comes from my pest-control person: Add a mothball to your vacuum cleaner’s dust collection bag. If you suck up bugs, the mothball will kill them. Without it, they can crawl right back out of the bag and into your house." — L.K. in Florida

• "I purchase extra school supplies when back-to-school time brings the sales. Inevitably, we need extras as the school year wears on, and these items can be pricier later." — Y.C. in Alabama

• "A great addition to coffee is flavored ice cream. It adds sweetness, creaminess and a hint of something surprising. Also, it cools hot brew and puts a fancy little froth on top." — W.L. in West Virginia

• A great aches-and-pains cure is just waiting in your kitchen. Mix a tablespoon of horseradish with a cup of olive oil, let it marinate for a half-hour and massage away.
