INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
They Looked Dangerous.
Carthage Doctor
Overhauled on the Highway by a Large Body of Horsemen.
About 1 oclock this
morning as a Carthage doctor was returning from a visit
to a patient west of the city, he discovered when a few
miles out that he was pursued by a body of horsemen.
There were so many of them that he decided that they
could not be highwaymen and halted to await their
approach.
When within a few rods of
him the horsemen stopped and four of their number rode
forward, two on each side of his buggy. They did not pay
much attention to him, although they glanced at him as
they passed. Their gaze was centered on the horse the
doctor drove. After passing him they turned and rode
back, again peering at the horse. Rejoining their
companions they all turned and rode away in the opposite
direction.
It was too dark for the
doctor to recognize the men, even had he known them, and
he acknowledges he was a wee bit nervous and saw more of
four men than he did of any one of them. He was followed
no more and arrived home without further adventure. He is
at a loss to explain the circumstance unless the men were
farmers looking for a stolen horse or mayhap they were a
body of anti-horse thief men.

Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin'
Sometimes I get a little tired of hearin
the doomsdayers tellin us how bad it is out
there. Course, most of us can figure that
its a lot easier to sit around writin
about evil than it is to get out and try to hang
on the good that seems to be survivin. As it is in most situations,
sittin round the cracker barrel
healin the worlds woes can be an
interestin exercise, but it doesnt
put any bread on the table. That only comes when
people put their back into somethin that
directly affects the community they live in.
Seems that gettin kids
together to enjoy an afternoon with friends and
parents, or promotin good health, or
raisin the communitys pride is a lot
more worthwhile than sittin round
gripin all the time.
This is some fact, but mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

To
Your Good Health
by Paul G. Donohue, M.D.Dont Overuse
Headache Medicines
DEAR DR. DONOHUE:
For the past three years I have had to use
aspirin or Tylenol several times a day for
headaches. My doctor cant find whats
causing them and doesnt have any
suggestions. Where should I turn? N.D.
ANSWER: A number
of common headache types can become chronic,
recurring headaches, and the key to stopping them
requires an identification of the headache type.
Migraine headaches
can become daily affairs. Migraines are one-sided
headaches that sometimes pound with each
heartbeat. Physical activity worsens them.
Specific migraine medicines are needed.
Chronic tension
headaches are another possibility. These
headaches are felt on both sides of the head, and
people describe them as pressure on or a
tightening of the head. Simple pain-relievers can
often stop tension headaches.
Post-traumatic
headaches are constant headaches that appear
after a head injury. Im sure you would be
aware of it if you had had such an injury.
One common thread,
however, unites many chronic headaches, and that
is overuse of headache medicines. Even though I
cant tell you what variety of headache you
have, I can tell you that you are using too much
medicine. Overuse increases the frequency and the
severity of the headache. To reduce dependence of
pain-relievers, you might have to take other
medicines while youre tapering off the
pain-relievers. Valproate and topiramate are two
examples.
You should turn to
a neurologist with a special interest in headache
treatment.
