Salesman: "Ladies and gentlemen, I have here the famous comb that will stand any treatment. You can bend it double - you can hit it with a hammer - you can twist it -"
Listener: "Say, can you comb your hair with it?"

End of Strawberry Shipments.

Season Has Been Unusually Short and Not Very Predictable.

The strawberry shipping season at Carthage is now nearly over and on the whole it has not been a successful one. The early frost and the later rains both curtailed the length of the season. There have been only about ten days of shipping and often there is double that. The most shipped from this place any one day was between 450 and 500 crates. Yesterday there were about 150 crates. Today there were only a few crates and most of them for long shipments, counting on Monday delivery. By nexty week it is said that there will be only a few berries going out and that is the end.

The price obtained has probably netted an average of a little over $1 per crate. That is not so bad as it might be, but represents no very big profits. Many of those who got less than a dollar net suffered from the poor condition of the fruit at times when rains were worst.

Fourth Annual Kids Fishing Day.

News release

The Missouri Department of Conservation is inviting all area kids and their parents to take part in the fourth annual Kids Fishing Day from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 11 at Kellogg Lake in Carthage, Missouri.

A variety of activities and events are planned including education stations featuring live animals, fly casting demonstrations and prize giveaways. This event coincides with Missouri’s Free Fishing Days (June 11 and 12), where anglers of all ages do not need a Missouri fishing permit to fish.

The first 400 anglers age 15 and under will receive a Kids Fishing Kit containing all sorts of goodies. Plus, every young angler that registers at the event and attends two education stations will be eligible for the prize giveaways.

The Carthage Police and Fire Departments, MAKO FlyFishers, and several local groups and businesses will assist with the event. There is no preregistration for this event but everyone needs to bring his/her own fishing pole and tackle. Worms will be provided.

Back when I was a kid, from time to time there would be published a list of current slang so parents could at least understand what their kids were sayin’ a portion of the time.

At that time slang such as "cool man," ‘hey dadio," and "Big Deal" was the norm of the day.

Today I have no idea what the current set of slang consists of. For a while there "Cool" seemed to permeate conversations in all age groups. The recent "Get ‘er done" has just about run its course I’m guessin’.

I had a co-worker several years ago that would constantly use "groovy buddy" and I took to sayin’ it to make fun of him. After a while the joke was on me and I found myself usin’ the term all too often. I suppose we’re all subject to peer pressure.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip

By JoAnn Derson

• "If you have china that has small, fine cracks in it, put it in a pot with enough milk to cover (not fat-free milk) and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. The milk bonds in the cracks and somehow seals them right up." — B.I. in Virginia

• "When you are slicing flank steak or chicken breasts (anything you need to cut thin and that has a lot of skin pieces or fat that make it hard to cut), try partially freezing the meat before cutting. It is much easier to cut, and it defrosts quickly after it is sliced thin." — C.O. in Indiana

• "Need a great shave? Fancy shave gels and foams can be expensive. Get a bottle of inexpensive hair conditioner. These usually cost less than a dollar, and you get months of use from one bottle." — E.L. in California

• "Use germ-killing mouthwash to wipe away infectious bacteria on doorknobs, light switches and telephone receivers." — T.B. in Arkansas
