He Fears Assassins.

Prof. Earnest Brown, the baritone singer, who, when not employed behind the footlights, is a porter at the Henkel barbershop, has applied to Justice Barton for permission to carry a revolver. He says his life has been threatened by enemies. The justice could not give the requested permission, and the professor does not know what to do.

Mrs. Burr Ross Is Better.

Mrs. Burr Ross, who shot herself Sunday afternoon at Purcell, was better this afternoon and there is now hope for her recovery. Night before last it was not thought that she would live through the night and the opinion was that she could not get well in any event. The unexpected turn for the better now brings much hope.

Mrs. Ross is a niece of Dan Buergy the Carthage Painter, and David Buergy , the head engineer at the City light plant, they being brothers of her mother.

Street Closure Requests.

The Public Safety Committee met Monday evening and approved two street closures involving the Carthage Square. The requests were brought to the committee by Chamber of Commerce Director Max McKnight.

McKnight requested that the square be closed for the annual Sidewalk Sale and British Motor Car show on July 23rd from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. This closure was essentially the same as in previous years including permission for vendors with waivers from the City. Police Chief Dennis Veach asked if the Farmers Market would be present and McKnight said that in past years that they have been included in the vendors, setting up along the outside of the square near Carthage Water and Electric. A motion was approved to forward the closure request to Council.

The other closure request was for the purpose of the Maple Leaf Parade on October 15. McKnight requested that the square and one block in each direction be closed from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. and that vendors with waivers be allowed. The motion was approved to be forwarded to City Council.

Mornin'
Don’t know if ya noticed, but as of this week we’re beginnin’ the fourteenth year as the Mornin’ Mail. Some folks think we’ve been around for ever, but we started puttin’ the Mail out on the street on June 18, 1992.

We are in fact the only newspaper to be actually printed in Carthage at this time.

If you’re onea our regular readers, you know the routine pretty well. Most folks seem to have a regular pattern they use to read through the paper. Some like to start with the hunderd year ago portion. I still sometimes refer to it as the "1893’s" ‘cause we started that feature in January 1993. Some start with the jokes or the Did Ya Knows. I’ve even heard a few folks say they eventually even get around to readin’ Just Jake Talkin’ from time to time. You must be one of ‘em. There is plenty of it, for what it is.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

Here's A Tip

By JoAnn Derson

• “Denture tablets are great for getting hard-to-scrub mineral deposits out of the bottom of the toilet. They also work really well when you need to clean a vase that has a thin neck. Just drop it in, and let it sit overnight.” -- P.P. in Arizona

• “If you have iron stains in your sink or elsewhere, fill ‘er up with Coca-Cola, and let it sit for several minutes. The Coke will eat away at the stains, and will make it easier to get them off.” -- A.C. in Maryland

• “If you cook a lot in a wok like I do, you know that many recipes ask you to brown meat or cook vegetables and then take them out to add back later. Instead of dirtying a dish, I just invert the lid from the wok and use it to hold the meat or veggies. I would have cleaned it anyway, so that’s one less thing to wash.” -- U.L. in New York

• “Be a streak detective by cleaning glass in a pattern. Use horizontal strokes on one side, vertical on the other. Then when you see a streak, you’ll know instantly what side of the glass it is on.” -- R.I. in Colorado
