today's
laugh
A builder took a prospect to
see some inexpensive houses he had just erected.
The prospect stood in one room, the builder in
the next one, and the latter asked, "Can you
hear me?" in a very low voice.
"Very faintly!" answered the prospect.
"Can you see me?"
"No."
"Thems walls for you, aint
they?" replied the builder.

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Carthage Quarry Co. May

Held Annual
Stockholders Meeting Yesterday - Officers Elected.
The Carthage Quarry Co.
held its annual stockholders meeting yesterday
afternoon and re-elected the old board of directors as
follows: E. OKeefe, P.J. McNerney, J.E.
OKeefe, M.A. McNerney, F.W. Steadley and T.N.Davey.
The directors afterward
met and re-elected the old board of directors as follows:
E. OKeefe, president P.J. McNerney, vice
president; John E. OKeefe, secretary and treasurer;
M.A. McNerney, general manager.
The past year has been a
good one for the company and the salary of the general
manager was raised. A proposition was also discussed for
doubling the capacity of the plant. Nothing was
determined as to this, but a committee was appointed to
investigate the subject thoroughly. They will report
later and then the directors will act finally on the
question.

Farmers
Market to Continue.
The Public Safety
Committee met Tuesday evening and approved a
motion to continue the Farmers Market as in
the previous years, only limited to the North
side of the square.
Ray and Lana
Mathis, who have overseen the Market since the
departure of the Main Street Board discussed with
the committee the positive effects of having the
event in the historic district. Ray Mathis said
that it is an asset to the square and to
Carthage, bringing tourists to the area and
increasing traffic to the downtown area.
"It serves
everybody in Carthage," said Mathis.
Mr. and Mrs.
Mathis asked for approval from the Committee to
continue the Market on the North side of the
square, as some complaints had been voiced on the
other three sides.
Committee Chairman
Mike Harris said that in his contact with the
vendors it had been his understanding that they
favored the weather conditions on the North side
of the square.
Mathis asked the
committee about buying a permit which had been
done previously. He said that the vendors all
contributed to the purchase of a permit under the
name of Main Street.
Chairman Harris
told the committee after the approval of the
motion that he would bring the item before full
Council.

Talkin'
Mornin'
If someone wanted to become
famous for inventing a device that would define
technological advance, they would come up with an
anti-bass filter.Not
this isnt a fishin story. Im
talkin bout bass as in the clef.
Those low thumpin tones that roll out of a
vehicle when the windows are up.
The device I envision would
either block the bass notes from enterin my
house after 11 p.m. or at least bring with them
some portion of the melody so I could recognize
it as music.
There surely must be some
electroantibass molecules out in the universe
somewhere. Sound waves have been studied as they
flow through the atmosphere. There has to be
somethin that could disperse them into
harmless drops of sonic waste. Thump-thump,
thump. Thump - thump, thump.
This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
JoAnn
Derson Denture tablets are great for
cleaning tough stains in the toilet bowl. Just
drop a couple in the bowl and let it sit
overnight before flushing.
"Twice a year I
like to clean out clutter and get rid of the
things I no longer need. One thing that has
really helped is to schedule a charity pickup for
the morning after I have a yard sale or tag sale.
Then, anything that hasnt sold gets packed
up and goes directly to charity the next day. I
cant put it off, so I dont end up
second-guessing my decision to get rid of
things." M.S. in Alabama
"Save pieces of
broken crayons to make colorful sun catchers.
Just place crayon shavings between two pieces of
waxed craft paper and iron to create a colorful
sheet you can cut shapes from. You can find
explicit directions for this in most craft books
or online." V.E.A. in Colorado
To give stuffed animals
new life, wipe clean with a damp rag, then fluff
in the dryer for 10 minutes with a fabric
softener sheet.
"I keep a framed
photo of my child on my desk at home. Behind the
photo in the frame is a piece of paper on which I
write important user names and passwords to sites
I use infrequently. This way I remember them and
they are still relatively secure. I have also
heard of friends who make up entries with the
information and keep it in their address books,
in such a way that it doesnt look like
password information." A reader, via
e-mail
"Popsicle sticks
can be used to label herbs in a flowerpot garden.
Mine are on my windowsill, so I dont have a
lot of space. The Popsicle sticks take up barely
any room in the pot and they are basically
free." M.L. in Texas
