In football you wear a helmet; in baseball you wear a cap. Football is concerned with downs; baseball is concerned with ups. In football you receive a penalty; in baseball you make an error. In football the specialist comes in to kick; in baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody. - George Carlin

Several Howard Grays.

The Genial Judge Gives His Wife a Shock - Hasn’t Bought Farming Land.

The item in the paper a few days ago stating that Judge Howard Gray had purchased farm land in Jackson township was an error. It was the Carterville Howard Gray who made the purchase.

In connection with the name "Howard Gray," the judge tells some amusing instances, as there are a number of Howard Grays in Jasper county and several of them get mail at Carthage.

One day not long ago the judge got a letter addressed to Howard Gray. It was a very loving epistle filled with "darling," "sweethearts" and other tender expressions.

The judge was going home to dinner when he opened it and decided to have a little amusement with his wife before returning from dinner to put the letter back in the postoffice.

By "merest accident" he dropped the letter in the room where his wife was as he passed through. Of course she picked it up and swallowed the bait, hook and all. A scene was imminent and was only averted by a reference at the close of the letter to "our happy time last Sunday afternoon." Mrs. Gray had been with the judge on the Sunday afternoon referred to and was willing after that sentence to entertain a motion to dismiss the case on grounds of insufficient evidence.

Rainy Halloween. If ya didn’t make it to the Square on Monday night to watch the kids and parents parade in their costumes ya missed the real treat.

I suppose there are near as many adults who enjoy the dressin’ up at their kids. For some reason seein’ adults get into the fun takes on a whole different outlook.

The Chamber organizes the event on the Square ever’ Halloween in a dual purpose of givin’ the kids a safe place to be goblins and attractin’ folks to take a look at the businesses operatin’ in the downtown area.

With Thanksgivin’ close at hand, the extra dose of sugar should go a long way toward gettin’ ready for the holidays ahead.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Vertigo Attacks Are Dizzying Problem

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. While doing some repair work, I jerked my head to the right and experienced severe dizziness that lasted two minutes. The condition still exists. When I lift my head upward, dizziness occurs. Do you know any treatments for benign positional vertigo? — M.L.

ANSWER: Almost all forms of vertigo — the sensation of spinning out of control — originate in the inner ear, where the body’s balance organs are located.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is common. Loose debris has settled to the bottom of the balance organs and erroneously signals the brain to think that the body or its environment is whirling around. The attacks occur when there is a change in head position. Many complain that rolling over in bed triggers an episode. Medicines such as Antivert or Phenergan might help, but they are not as effective as they are for other forms of vertigo.

A series of head movements performed by the doctor in the office can often move the inner-ear debris from the locations where it’s causing trouble. One of those techniques is called the Epley maneuvers.

If one session doesn’t end the attacks, the maneuvers can be repeated. Furthermore, there are other movement techniques that can bring success if the Epley maneuvers fail. An ear, nose and throat doctor is familiar with all of them.
