I want to be a race-car passenger, just a guy who bugs the driver. "Say, man, can I turn on the radio? You should slow down. Why do we gotta keep going in circles? Can I put my feet outta the window? Boy, you really like Tide." - Mitch Hedberg

According to most studies, people’s number-one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that seem right? That means to the average person, if you have to go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy. - Jerry Seinfield

Cowpeas Make Hens Lay.

A poultry man states that an acre of cowpeas was left uncut near his poultry yard and during the winter his hens attended to the harvesting of the peas. He was surprised to receive almost double the usual amount of eggs during that season. The peas are rich in protein and therefore should assist in forming eggs. The exercise in securing the peas is another factor which recommends the crop to the poultry man in search of winter eggs. It would be a good plan to sow a plot of cowpeas as an experiment, locating it conveniently for the hens.

The subway tavern in New York with its consecrated bottle and annex for women, has proved a failure on its original basis and Bishop Potter has sold it to a saloon man. The bishop might now try opening a "holy saloon" in Joplin, since Prosecuting Attorney Andrews has shut up the wine rooms where women were allowed to drink.

The first year spending as outlined by Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn includes the recruitment of additional officers, improved equipment, continued training and upgraded salaries.

Mornin'
I suppose that back when folks mainly lived on farms, the fall and winter were times when things slowed down a bit. The crops were in and it was a time ta enjoy the harvest and prepare for the short days and long nights of winter. That may have been where the tradition of keepin’ busy doin’ all the holiday "extras" filled a need.

‘Course that was before the tradition of football, basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer games was a staple of the season.

I’m sure in a flash we’ll look up and be rememberin’ New Years Eve. Seems the time ‘tween Halloween and the first of the year is just a blur anymore.

I suppose that passin’ time on the farm durin’ the winter got a little borin’ on occasion, but havin’ time ta repair a saddle or carve a toy surely made up for the monotony.

This is some fact, but mostly,

How to Raise Good Cholesterol

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You have written about the benefits of statins in reducing cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, but what does a person do when Lipitor — the statin I take — drives down the HDL? High doses of niacin failed to increase the HDL. — Anon.

ANSWER: HDL cholesterol — so-called good cholesterol — affords some protection against artery-hardening, heart attacks and strokes. Have you tried raising yours without resorting to medicines? A serious program of aerobic exercise can elevate HDL cholesterol. Aerobic exercise is the kind of exercise where large muscles are working continuously for at least 30 minutes and the heart rate stays elevated all through the exercise. Jogging, brisk walking, swimming and biking are examples of aerobic exercise. You don’t have to start with 30 minutes. Five minutes is a modest beginning, and then slowly but surely increase the time. Get your doctor’s approval for this.

Weight loss almost invariably raises HDL cholesterol. A diet that emphasizes whole grains, vegetables and fruits raises HDL cholesterol, as does avoidance of high-cholesterol, high-fat foods. Avoid trans fats, found in many margarines and baked goods. Fish-oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids also elevate HDL cholesterol.

Too many of us focus too much attention on cholesterol as being the only factor in heart health. It isn’t.
