                today's
                laugh
I had the worst birthday party
ever when I was a child, because my parents hired
a pony to give rides. These ponies are never in
good health, but this one dropped dead. It just
wasnt much fun after that. One kid would
sit on him and the rest of us would drag him
around in a circle. - Rita Rudner

        Young Men Fly High
        Kite.
        Just to show some fellows
that they hadnt forgotten how to make a kite,
Arthur Pearman and Oscar Gilmore, employees at the
Griswold wholesale grocery store made one yesterday and
flew it so high that it was but a dot against the sky.
The young men started their bird from the roof of the
Griswold building and let it out on a half mile of
string. The end of the cord was tied to a wire on top of
the building and the kite rode gracefully all the
afternoon without anyone paying any especial attention to
it except persons down on the street who
"rubbered" at it. The boys pulled the kite in
when they left the store at 6 oclock and will fly
        it again soon.
        Miss McMurtry invites the
ladies to attend her millinery opening and enjoy the
music by Miss Fagins orchestra Wednesday afternoon.
        Opening will continue over Thursday.

                Just Jake
                Talkin'
                Mornin
Ive finally accepted the fact that summer
is over. I try to delay that conclusion as long
as possible, but its time to perform the
annual fall rituals of puttin the wash tub
over the lawn mower and drainin the water
out of the hose. Wont be long till the leaf
rakin is an absolute necessity either. Just
as a reminder, if ya rake leaves into the storm
gutter, they plug up the system and flood the
neighbors. Now this may have some appeal to some
of you, but it not only isnt very
neighborly, its against the law here in
Carthage. Even with the high powered street
sweeper its tough to plow through a four
                foot stack a leaves. Ya
might see some big piles of leaves in the street,
but the street department usually stacks em
up to pick up later in the day in a truck so they
dont wash into the drain system.
                Burnin is still more fun.
This is some fact, but mostly,
                Just Jake Talkin.

                Here's
                A Tip
                by Jo Ann Derson
"I have a cheap solution for a kitchen
scrubbie. I just ball up the bag that onions come
in. It works for me!" C.A. in
                Illinois
                 "If your hands are
greasy, wash them with dish soap instead of hand
                soap." B.M. in Florida
If you need juice from a
lemon, lime or orange for a recipe, roll one that
is at room-temperature around under your palm on
the counter before you cut it open. It breaks up
the insides, and youll get a lot more juice
                out of each piece.
                 For easy-cleanup
pancakes, use a turkey baster to
"squirt" the batter into the frying
pan. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty
                good circle, too!
                 "If you have
leftover wine, freeze it in an ice-cube tray for
use in recipes later. I also use the same idea
for soup stock or broth. Its convenient to
store in a plastic bag once frozen, and its
                neatly portioned, too!" S.D. in
                Washington
                 "For hard-to-open
jars pickles and such use a pair of
standard dishwashing gloves. Theyre a great
gripper, especially if your hands are the least
                bit moist." D.L. in Indiana
