today's laugh

Two carrots were going down the street and one of them got run over by a car. The first carrot took the other to the hospital and waited outside. After a while the doctor came out and said,
"Well, I have good and bad news about your friend.
The good news is he’s going to live.
The bad news is, I’m afraid he’s going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life."

I couldn’t wait for success, so I went ahead without it. - Jonathan Winters

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.

Assaulted A Stranger.

A stranger, who failed to give his name to the police, reported to the night officers about midnight that he had been assaulted on East Third street, near the Irving school.

Blood was streaming down the man’s face and he presented a gory appearance. His story was that he had been standing near the curbing at the school house when two men drove up in a carriage. One of the men, he said, jumped out of the buggy, ran up to him and hit him a fearful blow in the face. He fell and while prostrate heard the rig drive off rapidly east, he thinks. When he came to enough to start up town he staggered from loss of blood and the effects of the blow, but was all right by the time he got up town.

The officers made search but saw no one nor found a clue. It is the supposition that the stranger was taken for someone else for whom the assailants had been looking. A gash over the right eye would indicate that the assailant had used metal knuckles.

Crosswalk Adjustment.

Police Chief Dennis Veach spoke to the Public Safety Committee about adjusting crosswalk on Centennial street by the Junior High building at the last Public Safety Committee meeting.

According to Veach the yellow line needs to be extended to the west to block an area that is currently a legal parking place. Veach told the committee that if a car is parked in the place it blocks the first 6 feet of the crosswalk visibility from the street. It would allow a pedestrian to walk further into the street before being seen by drivers. If the yellow line was extended the parking place would be eliminated and the path would be clearly visible. Committee member Jackie Boyer made a motion to adjust the crosswalk and it was approved by the committee. Veach said he would speak with Street Commissioner Tom Shelley to see when the painting could be arranged.

The committee also approved a bid for body armor for the police department. $10,000 was allocated in the budget for the armor for the purpose of purchasing 20 body armor units. Each unit has a life expectancy of five years. Veach recommended PACA Body Armor which can be purchased from Southern Uniform in Carthage. The price for 20 units from Southern is $9,917.80 and it is the state bid so no second bid was necessary. The committee approved a motion to accept the bid.

Veach was also granted permission to give the department’s current armor to other local agencies as has been done following past purchases of new equipment.

I’m thinkin’ ‘bout the only absolutes I’m aware of come from early kid shows.

Popeye and his "I am, what I am, what I am," and Davey Crocket with his "Be sure you’re right, then go ahead" still prob’ly are indisputable.

More typical seems to be the sayin’ "There are positively, absolutely, no exceptions to this rule, unless...."

‘Course in most instances there are always exceptions (unless??). As has been reported from New Orleans, there are times when what could be considered looting is acceptable. People wading through water up to their waste to get medicine or drinkin’ water for survival is prob’ly a legitimate exception. Floatin’ a big screen tv on an air mattress prob’ly isn’t.

One thing for sure, never say never.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Summer gathering season is almost over. There are still a few hanger ons in the way of mullein, mints, horehound, comfrey and boneset. If you gather and dry, you know that gathering up early while the juices and oils are most prevelant is the best time. Give thanks and don’t over gather. God has given us a wonderful bounty if we are careful in the gathering process we can maintain a healthy abundance of wild herbs. Ocassionally someone will drive by with ill gathered herbs from the roadside. I want to just scream, as those people are breaking the law by gathering on roadsides and worse yet, are frequently they are gathering commercially.

Just returned from a trip to the gulf coast. It was beautiful, but all the places I visited are now under evacuation from hurricane Rita. My daughters and families are all in safe places(I pray!). Thanks to all who asked.

With allergy season upon us and flu season approaching it is time to think of supporting the immune system. An old herbal stand-by for allergies has always been fenugreek/thyme. According to Jethro Kloss in the time honored Back to Eden, fenugreek is excellent for clearing mucous from the bronchial passages. It is soothing and cleansing at the same time. It has also been traditionally used with fever and for soothing inflamed bowels. While thyme is a common cooking herb, it is also been used as a tonic and was considered very valuable for use in whooping cough, allergies, asthma and lung problems. Kloss states that thyme blends well with other herbs.

artCentral
artCentral celebrates 20 years, honors visionaries

The official nonprofit tax document from the State of Missouri affirms that artCentral became incorporated on November 25, 1985. However, long before artCentral became such an entity, it was an idea, a vision, a dream of two people: artist Bob Tommey and art patron Sandy Higgins, both who worked tirelessly and relentlessly to create an art community in Carthage, Missouri. Then, too, there were several artists during those "early days" who were key supporters, helping to sustain and champion the cause.

In the spirit of gratitude and celebration, artCentral is taking the opportunity to honor Bob Tommey, Sandy Higgins, and that small cadre of artists at the Third Annual Maple Leaf Wine Tasting Party on Sunday, October 9. In particular, the Wine Tasting event will serve as the opening reception of "Bob Tommey & Friends", an exhibition of paintings by Bob Tommey along with artwork by Doug Hall, Jeff Legg, Bill Snow, and Andy Thomas. Additionally, a token of appreciation to Sandy Higgins will be announced that afternoon.

In preparation for this grand occasion, artCentral will be closed from September 26 through October 4, reopening with regular hours on Wednesday, October 5. In the meantime, you can leave a message at 358-4404 if you have discovered a fabulous silent auction item you’d like to donate, or to register in advance for the Third Annual Maple Leaf Wine Tasting Party. This is a ticket-only event–$25 per person/$40 per couple–that I just know you’ll want to attend!
