Kid McCoy at Joplin.

About a dozen Carthage men went to Joplin last night to see the "boxing match" at the Club theatre between the famous Kid McCoy, the world champion of middle weight, and Jim Carter, announced as the heavy weight champion of Alabama.

The theatre was crowded with a noisy audience who cheered enthusiastically whenever a paint was scored.

The contest was a very one-sided one and although Carter was not knocked out until the fifth round it was apparent to all that McCoy had things all his own way and only permitted the five rounds in order to give the crowd "their money’s worth."

Hottest.

The first week of August was the hottest of the year. Carn’s Sarsaparilla is not only the cheapest blood purifier but the best for the season. $1 bottles only 20¢. 411 Howard Street.

Code Revisions to be Discussed.

The City Council Public Works Committee will meet this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

Items on the agenda include the discussion of revisions to Chapter 22 of the City of Carthage Code Book. Public Works Director Chad Wampler says that the revisions concern the codebook’s current standards of street construction specifications, specifically the required 6 inches of base rock and 2 inches of asphalt. Wampler says that these specifications are not considered standards anymore, and he will request that the committee consider changing the code.

Mornin',
I’m always a little amazed at how accurate the speedometers are in our vehicles. At least accordin’ to that "your speed is" machine that out on the streets. ‘Course I’ve only tested it up to around 32 mph since it’s in city limits.

As a teenager I can remember followin’ a buddy who had put on oversized tires on his hot rod to get a sense of how far off his speedometer was. Bein’ a responsible kid, he sure didn’t wanna be caught goin’ over the speed limit. The definitive word in that statement of course is caught. He mainly wanted to know the maximum speed he could show on his speedometer when he passed a patrolman on the highway.

As I remember the jalopy couldn’t do much more than the limit anyway without onea those retread truck tires blowin’ out.

This is some fact, but mostly,

To Your Good Health
By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: At first, doctors thought I had pneumonia. Then they decided I had congestive heart failure. How can such a mistake be made? I am now taking all sorts of medicines. Before, I wasn’t taking any. Will I ever get off them? I am 79. -- N.N.

ANSWER: Pneumonia and congestive heart failure have two things in common: Both fill (congest) the lungs with fluid, and both make a person short of breath. With pneumonia, the fluid in the lungs is filled with white blood cells trying to fight off the infection. With congestive heart failure, the fluid in the lungs is fluid that has leaked from the circulation due to a backup of blood in lung blood vessels. The two can be mistaken, but the error is usually quickly corrected.

Congestive heart failure results when the heart is no longer a good pump. Its muscle has become so feeble that it can’t empty all the blood in it. Pressure inside lung blood vessels rises and forces fluid into the lungs’ air sacs.

Causes of heart failure are many. A heart attack can weaken heart muscle and its ability to pump. Deformed heart valves are another cause. Uncontrolled blood pressure can bring on heart failure.

Medicines can often get the heart pumping more strongly. Water pills rid the body and lungs of excess fluid. ACE inhibitors take the stress off heart muscle. There are many medicines, and a person often must take a combination of them. More likely than not, you will have to take them for life.
