INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Gets $40,000 in Cash.
Andy McInturff, of
Carterville, yesterday sold his 40 acre lease on land
three miles east of Duenweg to Mattes Bros. representing
the Consolidated Jack Co. The consideration is named as
$40,000 cash. The discovery of ore has been made in five
drill holes, showing a 30 foot face, both lead and jack,
and a shaft has gone down into the ore. There has not as
of yet been any drifting and there is no mill on the
ground. The sale was made wholly on the record of the
drilling and showing in the shaft.
William Randall, a farmer
from near Bartlesville, broke his drouth in Carthage
yesterday by crawling under the lid, and Officer Deagan
took him out in the cold. He pleaded guilty this morning
in police court and was assessed the regulation $7.50.
Not having the price, he went below.
Major Harrington, S.H.
Regan and Burt Woolcott went to Pittsburg today.

Fire Ban Still
On.
High Risk
Expected to Continue.
The burn ban
issued on January 17 is still effective for the
Carthage area. According to Fire Chief Cooper
there have been relatively few violations in
Carthage.
Members of the
Carthage Fire department yesterday assisted
extinguishing a fire in Lawrence County. The fire
was in the Sarcoxie district but there was not
enough help available and outside assistance was
necessary. Carthage sent one fire truck and the
fire was extinguished within the day. The Avilla
fire department also assisted with the fire.
The month of
February has been notorious for frequent fires
according to Cooper, who cited approximately 200
fires in February of 1996. With historical high
risks under normal circumstances the concern this
month will be elevated due to the extreme dry
weather.
The Carthage Fire
Department has stressed the fact that until a
significant amount of rain is received the burn
ban will continue to be in place and the risk of
fire will still be high. Trash, brush, fence row
burning and control burns are not allowed under
the burn ban.

Talkin'
Mornin'
I find myself readin the labels of various
packaged snacks in a weak moment from time to
time. I have noticed one ingredient that has
perked my curiosity.I
have yet to figure out why they identify
"mechanically separated chicken." This
precisely defined meat product pops up in hot
dogs, polish sausages, and various snack sticks
like Slim Jims.
Havin known some folks
that worked in a hot dog factory, Im not
surprised by anything that might be considered
fair game as an ingredient, I just cant
understand what difference it makes if the
chicken is "mechanically separated."
Ive never seen the designation for beef or
pork.
In reality, Im
probly not wantin to hear a detailed
explanation. I suppose some things are better
left unknown.
This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's
A Tip
By JoAnn Derson
"Make sure that you keep track of what items
in your house have a warranty that you purchased
from the store. I recently had our washer
serviced and came across an extended-warranty
plan that we purchased six years ago, when it was
new. I had totally forgotten about it, and I paid
for service I neednt have." -- R.C. in
Illinois
"When I have a
party, or even just dinner guests, I leave out a
disposable camera for everyone to take pictures
with. The pictures usually turn out so good that
my friends have started leaving me money for
their own set of prints." -- T.K. in Arizona
"Heres a
recipe for a great burger: I make mine with a
center of sautéed mushrooms and onion, with
herbs and garlic. I just make an indentation in
the patty, scoop a bit of the sauté mixture into
the indentation, then seal it up in the ground
beef. I use an indoor grill, so I can make it
anytime, and theyre so moist." -- J.M.
in Pennsylvania
"I sometimes use my
regular salad dressing as a marinade. It works
just as well, and its a lot less expensive
than buying a separate bottled marinade." --
C.C., via e-mail
I line my bathroom
drawers with two or three layers of paper towels.
If something spills, or if it just starts to get
grungy, I can take a layer out quite easily, and
without it being a big production.
"I love aluminum
foil. I can line my pan and bake a dish, cook it,
lift it out and freeze it, and I never have to
wash the dish." -- S.O. in Missouri
