Wanted Homestead Land Here.

Nodaway County Man Sends Interesting Inquiry to Recorder Hobbs.

A blacksmith and wheelwright from Ravenwood in Nodaway county wrote Recorder Hobbs of this county the other day as follows;

"Please let me know if there is any good land in your county that can be homesteaded? How far from the county seat is it and what is the timber?"

Mr. Hobbs replied that this is a county of 100,000 inhabitants with three cities in it above the 15,000 mark and that the inhabitants had either lumbered or burned the timber for firewood until standing trees are scarce except as shade trees, while land which it was allowed hunter to even walk over, let alone take possession of, is getting scarce.

To Look At Skate Park Feasibility.

The City Council Public Services Committee will look more closely at the possibility of constructing a skate park in the City. At the meeting earlier this week the committee accepted a petition containing 200 signatures from Carthage High School students which requested the City to approve the building of a skate park. The petition was presented to the committee by citizen Russell Short.

Committee Chair Jim Woestman told Short that the committee has already made note of public interest in the matter and will continue to research the feasibility of the construction, as well as the best location.

The project would need to be funded primarily by independent sources with a potential donation from the City, according to Woestman. Areas of consideration currently include Municipal Park and the Fair Acres area. The committee will continue to discuss the matter at its meeting next month.

The committee has for the past several months conducted an ongoing study of the City parks. The study has listed areas for improvement, maintenance items and developmental ideas.

Mornin'
February 10th, my warning call to all those who might need a reminder about the importance of the middle of this month as it relates to the general well bein’ of any relationship ya may be involved in.

Now I know that a good portion of ya get tired of me doing this little reminder ever’ year, but for those poor souls that forget the 14th, it’s gotta be done.

After all, it’s not that the earth will come to an end if those flowers or candy doesn’t show up. The real tragedy is the year of makin’ up for it.

‘Course I’m mainly talkin’ to the male species. This is one portion of the social fabric that has not yet moved onto the equality scale. Bathrooms at the convenience store may be shared by male and female (on an individual basis of course), but the "glass ceiling" for men is Valentine’s day.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

A few pieces of nutritional trivia:

• Fast foods are notable for their lack of Vitamin A. If this is your frequent food choice during the rushed day, be sure to consume lots of vegetables and possible supplementation with antioxidants.

• A 12 ounce cola beverage may contain as much as 50 milligrams of caffeine. In the body of a 60 pound child, two or more such cola beverages are equivalent to the caffeine in 8 cups of coffee for a 175 pound adult.

• Even when a person is asleep and totally relaxed the cells of many organs are hard at work expending energy. Cells maintain all life processes without any conscious effort; however, it represents about two-thirds to three-fourths of all the total energy a person spends a day. The remainder is utilized by the muscles.

• In many cases, lactose-intolerant people can tolerate fermented milk products such as yogurt, hard cheeses, cottage cheese and acidophilus milk. The bacteria in these products digest lactose for their own use leaving a product lactose intolerants may consume.
