Nabisco announced recently that it’s coming out with new bite-sized Oreos that are easier to eat. How lazy are we getting in this country when people are too exhausted to eat Oreos? Who eats an Oreo and goes, "Let me wrap the rest of this up. I wish they were smaller." - Jay Leno

In the best-case scenario, Galileo will harmlessly blow up while entering Jupiter’s atmosphere. The worst-case scenario? Jupiter will launch a war of terror against Earth. - Tina Fey

Sherm Drake To Resign.

Well Known Police Officer to Become a Frisco Detective.

Police Officer Sherman Drake this afternoon accepted a position with the Frisco railway company as a special detective for the Western Division and will resign his position on the Carthage police force between now and Tuesday. He will begin his new work as soon as his resignation is accepted.

Mr. Drake will have headquarters in Neodesha, Kan., and will move his family there soon. The new position carries with it a handsome salary and Sherm is receiving the congratulations of his friends.

Carthage loses a first class police officer when Sherm Drake goes away. For nearly ten years he has held a position on the force and once served a term as City marshal. He is sober, upright and honest and the Frisco gets a valuable man. He seems to be peculiarly capable as a detective. Many a bad man owes his place behind prison bars to the clever work of Sherm Drake.

While Mr. Drake realizes that this position comes in the way of a fine promotion and bears a good salary he regrets that he must leave Carthage.

Today's Feature

Four Apprehended by Police.

Police Chief Dennis Veach reported a very busy day for the Carthage Police on Tuesday after the arrests of four suspects in two separate cases.

In the morning around 9 a.m. the Police Department received a phone call from a Springfield trucking company reporting the presence of a stolen truck cab in Carthage. The truck was reported to be in the region of HH Highway and Hazel, and was located by a global positioning device owned by the trucking company. Officers proceeded to the site and located the truck in the parking lot of Peach Tree Dental office, according to Veach.

Veach says responding officers found a male and female inside the truck and attempted to remove them from the vehicle. A struggle ensued but the officers were successful in obtaining the keys to the truck and two impact clubs from the suspects. The suspects were heard to make reference to the possession of a firearm at which point Veach says the responding police officers set up a perimeter around the barricaded suspects.

After approximately an hour the suspects were apprehended and taken to custody.

Around the time of resolution of this conflict the Police Department received another phone call reporting a robbery at UMB bank. Veach says that some of the officers not directly involved in the booking of the truck theft suspects were sent to the scene of the bank robbery. At UMB on Fairview and Garrison officers obtained information about the bank robbery suspects and the vehicle from witnesses.

Approximately 45 minutes after the information was distributed among law enforcement a pickup truck matching the description was reported on Highway 37. The vehicle was seen by a Jasper County Deputy and Highway Patrol officer. These officers stopped the vehicle and took to custody a Thomas Joel Maggard, 52 and Arleen Frances Wolfe, 46. The two are being held in Carthage on warrants from the State of California charging them with bank robbery and on pending Carthage charges. Money believed to be taken from the bank as well as other evidence were recovered from the vehicle.

I was tellin’ ya yesterday how well those Global Positioning Systems work. I suppose that couple stealin’ a truck in Springfield didn’t have time to stop an’ read the Mail. If they had they might have checked to see if their ill acquired vehicle was well equipped with the latest trackin’ device. I’m assumin’ it wasn’t onea those talk to ya while ya drive types or it might have warned ‘em that the cops were comin’.

‘Course the couple robbin’ the bank didn’t fare much better bein’ only fifteen or twenty miles way when they got caught up with. Looks like bein’ Bonnie and Clyde ain’t what it used ta be.

I suppose the main lesson is that the local law enforcement is on the job, doin’ their best to protect and serve.

This is some fact, but mostly,
