today's laugh

Money used to talk - then it whispered. Now it just sneaks off.

Dan: How do you like my jokes?
Stan: I can’t see anything funny in them.
Dan: Oh well, you’ll probably catch on after a while and laugh.
Stan: No, I laughed at them 20 years ago.

Some people think my friend George is weird because he has sideburns behind his ears. I think George is weird because he has false teeth with braces on them. - Steven Wright

Passed A Forged Check.

Stranger Gets $10 on Worthless Paper - C.L. Turner the Loser.

The officers are looking for a fellow who recently passed a worthless check for $10 on C.L. Turner. Mr. Turner cashes many checks for workmen and when this one was presented to him, signed by Carl Janney, of the Custom mill on Central avenue, he cashed it when a man whom he knew said it was all right.

But it developed that the man vouching for the stranger did not look at the check, neither did he know the man. He did not sign the check as the endorser, hence the loss will fall on Mr. Turner if the stranger is not captured.

The check was drawn on the First National bank, the name of the Custom mill and date line were stamped on. The signature of Mr. Janney was made without an attempt to reproduce his signature. Mr. Janney does not use a stamp, either of the name of the mill or of a date line. For this reason and the burgling attempt at a signature, the check was turned down at the bank the moment it was presented.

Mr. Janney warns all persons cashing checks to make sure of his signature and to verify same before cashing any more checks. He fears that the man possessing the rubber stamp with which the forged check was made may attempt to pass other checks.

It is possible that the man who passed the check on Mr. Turner may have received it from another and was not the forger.

Today's Feature

Will Discuss the Parking Ordinance.

The City Council Public Safety Committee will meet Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Carthage Police Department.

Items on the agenda include the reviewing of the proposed parking ordinance for front yards. At the previous Safety Committee meeting the committee broke the proposed ordinance into two sections; one covering parking restrictions for front yard and one covering parking restrictions for back yards. The information was then sent to City Attorney David Mouton to be drafted into an ordinance.

January 4th the Committee took a driving trip around Carthage to view parking conditions in selected front and back yards throughout the City. Those in attendance included Committee members Mike Harris, Jim Woestman, Bill Welch, Jackie Boyer, City Administrator Tom Short, Police Chief Dennis Veach and Mayor Kenneth Johnson.

The item has been brought repeatedly before the committee by citizens filing complaints about neighboring yards. Citizens have cited health concerns in addition to general appearance as reasons for adding an ordinance.

My dad used ta say that out in western Kansas they considered it a rain storm if someone saw three drops on a brick. It’s not quite that bad around these parts yet, but the less than a half inch of rain we got the other night was a welcome sight to most.

The National Weather Service has issued a "red flag" warning for most of south Central and southern Missouri as of yesterday. That means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.

With the warm weather and winds a blowin’ it’s prob’ly a good idea to postpone that wienner roast or leaf burnin’ planned this weekend.

As of yesterday evenin’ there was no official burn ban in Carthage, but a little common sense may be in order.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Not much new under the sun, just seems that way when it catches our own eyes. Like herbs. They have been around forever and many are just "seeing" them.

Take MACA for example. During the height of the Incan empire, legend has it that the warriors would consume maca to help them be strong and brave. It was given only during these battles as it also increased their libido. It’s reputation for enhancing strength, sexuality, fertility and anti-aging still abounds in South American countries. Although this potent plant is hard to grow outside the climate of Peru, scientists have not given up. In recent research, the hormone balancing effects are being studied. In a recent report on CNN, a news channel, it was reported that Maca La Molina to be the "natural Viagra". More research is underway.

On a recent sunny afternoon (who would think this day in January!), some friends and I visited down at George Washington Carver park. There is quite an expansion going on at the visitor center, but the walk was beautiful. In the spring they have herb walks and lots of outdoor activities for kids.. a short drive away and an inspiration for any herbalist.
