A man sought medical aid because he had popped eyes and a ringing in the ears. A doctor looked him over and suggested the removal of his tonsils. The operation resulted in no improvement, so the patient consulted a doctor who suggested the removal of his teeth. The teeth were extracted but the man’s eyes still popped and the ringing in his ears continued.
A third doctor told him bluntly, "You’ve got six months to live." In that event, the doomed man decided to treat himself right while he could. He bought a flashy car, a chauffeur, had the best tailor in town make him 30 suits, and decided even his shirts would be made to order.
"Okay," said the shirtmaker, "let’s get your measurement. Hmm, 34 sleeve, 16 collar-"
"Fifteen," the man said.
"Sixteen collar," the shirtmaker repeated, measuring again.
"But I’ve always worn a 15 collar," said the man.
"Listen," the shirtmaker said, "I’m warning you. You keep on wearing a 15 collar and your eyes will pop and you’ll have ringing in your ears."

Bombardia Transportation introduced its new Jet Train, a locomotive that is powered by a jet engine. That’s right, folks, it’s the new form of transportation that combines the danger of flying with the poor safety record of trains. - Jimmy Fallon

It’s good ta have a routine, bad ta have habits. Routines keep ya focused, habits detract and have no objective.

‘Course there are those who will argue that there are good habits and bad habits. But routine is never considered a negative except by those who don’t have the will power to establish one. Then, there are those who get so good at their routine that some might mistake it for a habit.

Many coffee drinkers would no doubt find the idea that the beverage was part of their routine much more palatable than to think of it merely as a habit.

I personally have established several subroutines that when correctly and appropriately carried out establish a general, overall routine. ‘Course I do have the habit of exaggeratin’ a mite.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Taking Body Temperature

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend has an 11-month-old daughter who had an E. coli blood infection. The child shuddered once, was a bit lethargic, but felt cool to the touch. The digital ear thermometer registered normal. My friend’s instinct was to go to the hospital. The baby had a temp of 105. Are digital thermometers ineffective? -- G.W.

ANSWER: "Digital" refers to the way information is displayed -- in digits (numbers). A digital watch shows time as 10:02, for example, not with the large hand pointing to the minute and the small hand to the hour. The issue with thermometers is not how they display body temperature but which body site gives the most accurate reading.

Rectal temperatures are subject to fewer vagaries than temperatures taken at other body sites, and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommends rectal-temperature-taking for children up to 5 years of age. It doesn’t matter if the temperature is displayed digitally or on a gauge with degrees.

Ear thermometers are accurate to within 0.2 F (0.1 C). They use infrared sensors to measure the heat given off by the eardrum and surrounding tissues. Placement can be a problem, especially with young children.

Your friend is blessed with common sense. Severity of illness should not be based on one finding. A blood infection with E. coli can cause a drop in body temperature, and looking for a high temperature could be misleading. The baby’s temperature might have risen en route to the hospital.
