We did some remodeling, and the
workmen had an attitude. The painter came, and I
asked, "Could you fill in some of these
holes before you start, please?" He said,
"Lady, I dont spackle, I dont
sand. I just paint." Then the exterminator
came in. I said, "Kill the painter."

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
Twenty-Years Ago.
An Old Gavel Recalls a
Local Temperance Society Which Existed in 1885.
A temperance society
called the "Sons of Temperance" that flourished
in Carthage 20 years ago is recalled by the presentation
to the local W.C.T.U. of a gavel which was used by this
old time organization.
While in Carytown recently
Mrs. E.W. Newton visited Mrs. May Swing Matthews who
lived in Carthage years ago and whose husband was once
principal of the schools here. Mrs. Matthews gave Mrs.
Newton this old gavel and a list of the members of the
old society. She had found them among some of her old
keepsakes. At the last meeting of the W.C.T.U. of which
Mrs. Newton is a prominent member, she gave the gavel to
the union and it will be used in the meetings.
The list of names also
becomes the property of the union and will be kept among
the organizations most cherishable records.
Many have almost forgotten
that the "Sons of Temperance" ever existed. It
was a national organization with chapters in nearly all
towns. The members took the abstinence pledge and
contributed towards a fund used to promote the cause of
temperance. In Carthage the society was of some political
significance. In this respect its object was to keep the
two parties from mixing in what was called "saloon
politics." It appears that Carthage at that time had
a saloon ring which had a considerable following and cut
no small figure in local politics. The "Sons of
Temperance" endeavor to get the voters to remain
loyal to the old parties and put down the ring. That the
old saloon ring was finally broken was due in large part
to the work of this society.

Today's
Feature
Potential
Changes to Fees.
The City Council
Public Works Department reviewed permit fees for
at the last meeting. Public Works Director Chad
Wampler informed the committee that the
department is looking at compiling a
comprehensive list of fees with possible
modifications.
The list will
potentially be updated with prices based on the
amount of paperwork and man-hours required to
complete each inspection. Wampler showed the
committee differences in pricing for permits
comparing a Springfield, MO list and the current
Carthage list.
Nothing was
decided upon by the committee but members agreed
to consider the potential changes for further
discussion at the next meeting.
The bids for the
River to Pearl drainage ditch phase III were also
brought to the committee for consideration. A
motion was approved to recommend to Council a bid
from G & G Construction of Carthage in the
amount of $175,695.00.
This item will be
presented to Council in the next regular meeting
which is to be held Tuesday, January 24.

Boomerang. Dont know for sure, but
Ive always understood they originated in
Australia. As kids, my neighbor and I fashioned
these primitive, yet somehow sophisticated tools
and learned to actually get em to fly back
within a respectable distance.I suppose with enough practice ya might
even be able to bring down a meal or two, but we
never got that hungry. We were in it for the
sport. I think that was also the summer we
discovered sling shots. Not the kind with the
fork and the inner tube rubber bands, the kind
with the two strings and a piece a leather like
David was usin. Never got accurate with
those either, but you could sure get some
distance with a rock.
Around our neighborhood, we
soon fully understood the meanin of
"give him plenty a room."
This is some fact, but mostly,

Natural
Nutrition
By Mari An WillisNot much new under the sun, just seems
that way when it catches our own eyes. Like
herbs. They have been around forever and many are
just "seeing" them.
Take MACA for example. During
the height of the Incan empire, legend has it
that the warriors would consume maca to help them
be strong and brave. It was given only during
these battles as it also increased their libido.
Its reputation for enhancing strength,
sexuality, fertility and anti-aging still abounds
in South American countries. Although this potent
plant is hard to grow outside the climate of
Peru, scientists have not given up. In recent
research, the hormone balancing effects are being
studied. In a recent report on CNN, a news
channel, it was reported that Maca La Molina to
be the "natural Viagra". More research
is underway.
On a recent sunny afternoon
(who would think this day in January!), some
friends and I visited down at George Washington
Carver park. There is quite an expansion going on
at the visitor center, but the walk was
beautiful. In the spring they have herb walks and
lots of outdoor activities for kids..such a short
drive away and an inspiration for any herbalist.
