I’m having car problems. My "check engine" light came on today. I couldn’t check it, there was too much smoke in the way. Then the "game over" light came on. I hadn’t seen that one before. - Dobie Maxwell

Starbucks is everywhere. I’m waiting for home delivery. Instead of hearing, "Here’s your pizza, enjoy the game, " it will be, "Here’s your latte, enjoy your meaningless conversation with your friends." - Daryl Hogue

Some guy broke into our house last week. He didn’t even take the TV. He just took the remote. Now he drives by and changes the channel on us. - Brian Kiley

Date Set For Groundbreaking.

Library Project to Begin in February

February 6th will be the date for the groundbreaking of the Carthage Public Library expansion project according to Library Director Jennifer Seaton. The Library Board met earlier this week to set the date for the event which will be held at noon in the Library garden. The public is invited to attend.

The decision was also made to move the current book-drop box to the Northwest corner of the lot, on Garrison Ave. The move is to be completed later this week.

Utility lines have been moved from the future construction area in preparation for the commencement of the work. According to Seaton contractors may begin as early as next week. The time-line for construction is not completely finalized but Seaton said the Board expects that the work will move quickly.

Recently the permit for construction was approved and released by the Carthage Public Works Department according to Public Works Director Chad Wampler. The plans were also approved by the Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation board which issued certificate of appropriateness for the project.

It’s hard to imagine that folks got excited ‘bout it only takin’ a few days for mail ta get delivered via the pony express. What I remember from history lessons is the operation only lasted a few months. The telegraph and railroad pretty much put an end to lonely riders scamperin’ ‘cross the prairie.

With today’s overnight delivery, we get used ta the upscaled service.

Sometimes I picture some Hole in the Wall gang member climbin’ up a telephone pole and cuttin’ the wire in preparation for a stage holdup. Bein’ a crook musta been a lot easier back then. ‘Course that was ‘fore light bulbs were invented, so folks had ta watch the evenin’ news on TV in the dark.

This is some fact, but mostly,
