A heavy snow was melting and the mud suggested that there was need of several sidewalks.

Carthage had a coal famine and the wood haulers from the "Center Creek timber" were enjoying it.

Jasper County 165th Birthday.

The celebration for the 165th birthday of Jasper County was held in the courthouse this Thursday. Presiding Commissioner Chuck Surface announced local historian Marvin VanGilder who spoke on the history of the County and the settlers who first occupied the area.

"They had to fight to get here," said VanGilder about the original settlers in the county, citing struggles against weather and the obstacles of the land and water.

Congressman Roy Blunt spoke about citizens confidence in the Jasper County officials.

"This is the level of government where people truly have an understanding of what the officials do," said Blunt, adding, "the county system of government provides consistent verification that government really works."

Irene VanGilder presented Blunt with CDs of Civil War history information.

City Council member Tom Flanigan and Public Administrator Rita Hunter read proclamations on behalf of Senator Gary Nodler and Missouri Representatives Ronald Richardson, Steve Hunter, Marilyn Ruestman and Speaker Rod Jetton. The proclamations congratulated the County on its 165th birthday.

County officials also noted a special display of Civil War memorabilia in glass display cases in the Courthouse which are available for viewing for a limited time.

An acquaintance of mine moved his office to a new location a few weeks back. The transfer included remodelin’ to some extent and particularly the repaintin’ of the place. He of course accepted the help of a few friends.

The guy assigned to paintin’ the front of the place did a great job and painted ever’ exposed area he could find. He made sure to use plenty of paint and locked up when he was done. The next mornin’ when it was time ta open up there was a problem gettin’ the front door open. Seems the paint on the door and the door jams had become one. The door was sealed tight.

Fortunately there was a back door and after removin’ hinges and slicin’ around the door for a while it came loose. Where are friends when ya need ‘em?

This is some fact, but mostly,

Where is old man winter hiding? We are ready for some rain and snow and colder temperatures to make our summer a better one. Planning for the future is a wise choice. Without some uncomfortable weather this winter, we will be in for a mess this summer. Without some financial planning, the financial security one hopes for may not be there. Without some healthy choices for our bodies, the graceful aging we hope for may not be possible.

Just today there was talk on the TV about the many benefits to your cardiovascular system by taking Omega 3 oils. Hummm... is this supposed to be news? Omega three oils in the form of deep cold water fish or flax seed have been a staple in many a health conscious persons’ diet. One thing to remember about these oils is they are NOT beneficial if heated. One does not cook with flax seed oil, but adds it to salads, yogurt, cottage cheese or a smoothie. Some like it directly off the spoon. Fish oils are often taken in softgel form as the taste is not so great. My Granddaughters are good about taking theirs in a new chewable form. Studies have shown that children who have fish oils score higher in scholastic testings than those who don’t.

As we have said for years, "keep the tin man oiled and you will have less stiffness." Fish oils, borage oil, flax seed oil, evening primrose and black current oils are also among the beneficial oils available on the market today.
