today's
laugh
One of the football players on
the high school team was flunking mathematics, so
the coach went to the math teacher to put in a
good word for his star player.
Math Teacher: But look how
badly he did on the test. You see this problem?
He said 9 x 8 was 74.
Coach: But he only missed by
one!
Today in America, a
professional wrestler is struck down with a
folding chair once every thirty-five seconds. And
not one is seen by a referee. - Bill Maher.
Julia Roberts, I miss our phone
calls. But it seems like ever since you got
Caller ID youre never home. - Steve Martin

INTERESTING MELANGE.
A Chronological Record of Events as they have
Transpired in the City and County since our last Issue.
A Gun Down His Throat.
J.W. Coyle Met With
Rough Treatment at the Hands of a Highwayman.
Fearful lest a revolver,
the barrel of which was literally rammed down his throat,
might go off, J.W. Coyle, a Johnstown blacksmith, wisely
shelled out his weeks wages - $15 - to a lone
highwayman who accosted him at the eastern edge of
Carterville.
Coyle was walking along
not suspecting danger, for it was not later than 7
oclock, when a man sprang up in front of him and as
Coyle in surprise opened his mouth to speak the stranger
jammed the barrel of a revolver into his mouth. Pushing
the big weapon far enough the victims throat to gag
him and almost choke him, the robber demanded money and
got it without a quibble from Coyle. Upon getting the
cash the bold robber jerked his gun from its strange
scabbard and ran away. Coyle ran to Carterville and
proved his story with a bloody mouth, three loosened
teeth and an empty pocketbook.

Today's
Feature
To Consider
Alternative High School Site.
News release
The Carthage R-9
Board of Education will hold its second public
forum at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, January 9, in the
Carthage High School Auditorium, 714 S. Main
Street, to determine the level of support for a
potential bond issue in April 2006.
The Board will
provide an overview of the proposed new high
school project and discuss the proposal with
patrons. The Board will also announce and seek
discussion regarding an opportunity to construct
a new high school at an alternative location at
the edge of town rather than at the east end of
the Steadley School Property, located west of
town on HH Highway at Chapel Road.
Board President
Tony Diggs stated, "The Board of Education
is excited about being able to announce this new
site at the public forum on January 9. The new
site addresses the concerns we have heard in
relation to building on the east end of the
Steadley Elementary School Campus. The new site
is "in town." The speed limits are much
slower than on HH Highway and Chapel Road. And
the new site eliminates the concerns of having a
high school next door to an elementary
school."
Superintendent
Gary Reed stated, "The new site is closer to
the geographic centers of the district, which
will improve efficiency for the next 75 or more
years by reducing the mileage traveled daily by
school buses and private vehicles."
"The new site
also includes a larger parcel of land than is
presently available at Steadley, so hopefully the
district will never be landlocked and will always
have plenty of green space for students to
use."
Reed added,
"This new site demonstrates that the Board
of Education has a true long-range vision for the
future. I am very excited for the children of
Carthage and for the potential economic
development of Carthage."

Talkin'
Mornin'
I used ta amaze friends by takin a hat pin
and carefully pushin it into a fully
inflated balloon. Then just ta show that there
wasnt anything fishy, Id pull out the
pin and pop the balloon with it.The great part of the trick is the
double deception. The act of provin it was
on the up and up actually covers the whole
secret.
The trick of the whole thing is
ta put a piece of scotch tape on the balloon.
When ya stick the pin through the tape, it holds
the hole together and keeps the balloon from
poppin. To cover this giveaway, and to
quickly discard the tape, ya destroy the evidence
by poppin the balloon fore anyone
gets a look at it. No one wants to inspect a
popped balloon.
Sometimes the simplest things
can escape even the watchful eye of a skeptic.
This is some fact, but mostly,

the new year our thoughts frequently turn to
making some positive changes in our lives. Many
of these changes involve our health. Those may
include more exercise, less food, take my
vitamins, get more sleep, or have a happier
attitude.
Some of the supplements which
have found favor this year included:
Black elderberry: used for the
treatment of viral infections including the flu
Lutein: a supplement which has
been used for eye health, especially macular
degeneration.
COQ10: many have used this
supplement to increase energy and to aid in
weight loss. It is a primary nutrient for the
heart as our production of this co-enzyme
decreases as we grow older.
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)
is a fatty acid currently under study. It has
been a favorite of body builders who need to lose
the last of that fat before a competition or
people who want to lose "belly fat".
CLA encourages the breakdown of fat thats
already in storage. In some studies it showed
that the fat cell commits a form of cellular
suicide called apoptosis. At the same time, CLA
promotes the transport of fat into exercising
muscle cells.
Lavender oil may be soothing
after surgery according to one study done at New
York University Medical Center. While it did not
decrease pain levels, it was reported that those
who used the lavender oil had a lower level of
stress and greater satisfaction at the highest
score available on the test. Another added
benefit is that the oil has antibacterial
properties.
