I love to travel, much more than I’ve ever enjoyed getting anywhere. Arrival is overrated. Moving is much more exciting. Planes, boats, cars, trains, feet, whatever. I just want to move. I think destinations were invented just so we all wouldn’t look like were wandering around in a daze. - Jerry Seinfeld

Weekend Events Successful.

The weekend in Carthage was full of many different activities for citizens and for travelers visiting Carthage. Events included the Carthage Acoustic Music Festival, Arts in the Park, Art in the Heartland and Kid’s Fishing Day, among others. The weather during Saturday, the 10th reached temperatures of up to approximately 93 degrees, peaking around 3-4 p.m. in the afternoon.

The Acoustic Music Festival took place on the historic Courthouse Square from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The event saw approximately 800-1,000 people in attendance throughout the day. Event coordinator H.J. Johnson said that the festival drew good crowds that enjoyed the diverse acoustic sounds.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Kellogg Lake Board sponsored Kid’s Fishing Day, a day of learning and fishing activities at Kellogg Lake. Board member Ed Grundy said that the event had record attendance with approximately 600 registered kids and over 1,000 total attending. Grundy said that the event went exceptionally well.

The Arts in the Park event received a good turnout, according to event coordinator Dina Thomas. Thomas said that many of the people in attendance were glad that Carthage’s Central Park was being used for the event. Participating artists sold original pieces during the day and events such as dancing, music and temporary tattoo artists drew steady crowds. In addition to Carthage attendees the event drew many from out of town, according to Thomas.

Carol Klinginsmith organized the Art in the Heartland event which was held at Red Oak II. Klinginsmith said that the artists involved were happy with the event and expressed interest in participating next year. The art displayed included pottery, modern and western art, and the event featured live music and karaoke.

No Stench Detected On Carthage Square

Mornin',
One of the great things about warm weather is the choice of foot wear.

‘Course some folks choose ta wear boots year round. Those who work in the outdoors and especially those who out with livestock or high grass need the protection whatever the weather.

There are a lotta boot wearers that just like boots. Prob’ly the most popular in this part of the country is the "cowboy" boot. I put that in quotes ‘cause there just aren’t many real cowboys left. I’m not talkin’ bout the ideal of a cowboy, but those who actually live the part. Nonetheless, the boot lives on although "tennis shoes" are often seen danglin’ on the legs of horse riders. Again, a tennis shoe is seldom worn, usually "athletic" or "walkin’" shoes.

Bare footin’ at least doesn’t change.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Prunes Positive Effects

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past year, I have been eating two prunes daily right out of the box. I am no longer troubled by constipation. I am 87 years old.

I think you should pass this on to your readers. I have no financial interest in the prune/dried plum market. -- T.B.

ANSWER: I too think I should pass the information on. I always listen to my seniors.

Prunes, now renamed as dried plums, are nature’s laxative. They contain sorbitol, which keeps stool moist and soft. Their fiber content also contributes to their laxative effect. And they probably have some as-yet-undiscovered substance that keeps us regular. You get by with only two prunes a day; some have to eat six to eight to achieve the desired effect. That’s not too many.

Thank you for the financial disclaimer.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: When’s the best time to take a vitamin? There are no directions on the bottle, and all the doctors I ask simply shrug their shoulders. -- B.W.

ANSWER: It’s the kind of question that prompts a shrug because there’s not a lot of information on the subject. I have been told to take a multivitamin on a full stomach -- after eating. Many vitamins are absorbed better then.

I take a multivitamin early in the morning, before eating. It’s an act of defiance on my part.
