Street Extension on Agenda.

The City Council Public Works Committee will meet this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall. The agenda includes one item of new business, a discussion of the extension of 15th street.

This item was brought before the committee at the previous meeting by Citizen Richard Shipman. Shipman had asked the committee for permission to extend the pavement on 15th street one block beyond the intersection of 15th and James Street. According to Public Works Director Chad Wampler the street is platted to continue beyond James street, but the paving of the road was never completed.

The committee asked Shipman to submit a request in writing along with all available related information to the Public Works Committee so that it may be included as an agenda item for review by the committee. Shipman has requested the extension of the street because he owns a lot of land on which he wishes to build a house. The completion of the road would allow access to the lot from the street.

The Public Works committee meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in City Hall, 326 Grant.

Mornin',

I’ve seen those ads for the gizmo that attaches to the water hose to blow leaves outa the rain gutters. ‘Course they don’t show the folks usin’ ‘em gettin’ soaked to the core with all that water splashin’ around.

What I want to see is a gizmo that attaches to the vacuum cleaner to clean bugs outa those chandeliers. You know the ones, they look like big bowls suspended down from chains. They always have a handful a dead bugs in the bottom of ‘em and are usually hangin’ from a twenty foot ceilin’. The bigger the bowl, the more bugs are collected.

I’ve often wondered what bugs did at night before street lights were invented. Maybe lightnin’ bugs were the big attraction back then, givin’ a brief glimpse of the future social activity of bug kind. Then, ever’one knows bugs are for the birds.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Just Jake Talkin’.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is it possible to develop an allergy to wine? I have drunk a glass of wine with dinner for most of my life. Now, after drinking it, I wheeze and am short of breath. What would you advise? -- D.K.

ANSWER: I’d advise seeing the family doctor or an allergist. My hunch is that you might have developed a sensitivity to sulfites.

Sulfites are preservatives that are added to many foods. They occur naturally in other foods. They stop foods from spoiling or changing color.

About one person in 100 becomes sensitive to sulfites. When those people are exposed to sulfites in food or drink, they can have an asthma attack -- which it sounds like you are having.

Doctors can detect sulfite sensitivity by challenging a patient with a small amount of sulfite and observing any reaction. They are prepared to terminate a reaction if one occurs.

If it turns out that you are sulfite-sensitive, you have to become a label reader. Look for these words on the labels: sodium sulfite, sulfur dioxide, sodium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, potassium bisulfite and potassium metabisulfite.

Many wines contain naturally occurring sulfites.
