Just Jake
Talkin'
Mornin',
We receive letters from
time to time here at the office, but I cant
remember the last time I received a hand written
letter from an acquaintance. I get emails from
family and phone calls ever now and then
from old school buddies, but nobody I know sits
down to write a letter it seems.
Im figurin that the
fact that none of them have received a letter
from me in the last several years probly
has some effect on the dry spell.
Guess letter writin kinda
grows as a response to letters received. Same
with email and phone calls I suppose.
With cell phones becomin
more and more abundant, and postage fees
increasin, Im bettin that the
art of letter writin will continue to
suffer. It might be saved if someone invented a
ball point with spell checker.
This is some fact, but mostly,
Just Jake Talkin.

One can find the spicy tang of
ginger in many foods now. Even though ginger is
best known for culinary purposes, its
medicinal purposes are varied.
It is known to alleviate nausea
and as a digestive aid. Many have used it to aid
in the healing of ulcers, and support
cardiovascular health as well as a catalyst in
herbal blends. It is known as a warning herb used
in the treatment of cold and flus for reducing
fever.
In a recent article by Mark
Mulgahy, food expert for the Food Focus Magazine,
he states "that ginger helps to strengthen
the heart and is an effective cholesterol
reducer.
And yet another remarkable
attribute is that ginger has been found to be
equally effective as aspirin, acetaminophen and
ibuprofen in reducing inflammation."
It is a common practice in this
area to put an ounce or so in bath water as warm
as you can stand it and soak for about 20
minutes, wrap up in a nice thick robe or flannel
sheet and enjoy a nice sound sleep. This bath
seems to "warm the bones". A warming
cup of ginger tea is nice after a meal and will
aid the digestion of high protein diets.

Art Notes From Hyde
House
By Sally Armstrong, Director of artCentral
The big news this week is we
have a new satelite gallery! While assisting
Terry and Billie McDonald recently with the
renovation of the interior of their Sirloin
Stockade here in Carthage (the third time they
have renovated this very successful restaurant) I
was asked what kind of art I thought they should
hang in the front atrium room. They had already
decided to display a nice selection of Carthage
related prints in the larger part of the
restaurant and have enjoyed going to several of
the local artists galleries to pick out
various favorite Carthage scenes. I said had an
idea based on a rumour that I had heard about the
possibility of Shellies closing, but did not do
anything about it until I knew the rumour to be
reality. We were all saddened to hear of the loss
of Shellies, and it will be greatly missed. I
needed a new spot for the art of the satelite
gallery as we have depended on Shellies
generosity for so long. Billie and Terry agreed
that if my board liked the idea, we would create
an art gallery in the front and call it the"
Atrium Gallery at Sirloin Stockade", so that
is just what we have done!
As of Monday, the first show is
the art of Carthage artist Cheryl Church from the
"Women Series" and these pieces are for
sale. Please go by and notice all the wonderful
changes in the decor at Sirloin Stockade, and
please notice the wonderful permanent collection
in the main restaurant and the revolving show in
the new Atrium Gallery. Thanks to the McDonalds
from artCentral, and we look forward to much
success together.
Now dont forget in all
the activity of the upcoming Art Weekend in
Carthage to attend the opening of the wonderful
Annual Membership Show at the Hyde House. The
kick-off is the barbeque Friday night from 6:00-
8:00 and everyone come and bring a dish and your
lawn chair. This will be a great first show for
many of you who have been reading these articles
but have never attended, as we have 32 of our
member artists showing 63 pieces of art ranging
from oil paintingsand watercolors to fiber
sculpture and weaving and stone sculpture and
ceramics and jewelry. Margaret Haverstic from
Cottey College in Nevada spent two hours at the
gallery today judging the show and her choices
are as follows: 1st Award and $200.00 cash prize
to Kim Kissel for her oil painting
"SLEEP", 2nd Award and $100.00 cash
prize to Robin Putnam for her limestone sculpture
"UNTITLED" and 3rd Award and $75.00
cash prize to Lee Ann Sours for her weaving
"BLUE SHAWL". Congratulations to these
winners and to all who took their time to enter
this year please come out and see this
great show during our regular gallery hours from
June 9th and the evening opening to July 7th. See
you there!
(Aside: I have checked and the
winners MAY be published prior to the opening of
this show as written above. S.A.)
