A mini-bar is a machine that makes everything expensive. When I take something out of the mini-bar, I always fathom that I’ll go and replace it before they check if off, but they make that stuff impossible to replace. May Improve A Building.

E.S. Williams is Doing Some Figuring on Changes in a Business Block.

D.A. Innes has moved his insurance office from the second story of the E.S. Williams building on the north side of the square to rooms over C.R. Dumars’ Music store on the east side of the square.

Robt. Sweatt’s news and tobacco stand and Sweatt & Parkhurst’s barber shop, both of which occupy the room under the former Innes office, are also being got ready for a moving, but it is not yet determined where they will go. They have been given until the middle of April to make the move.

The reason for these changes is said to be that Mr. Williams is preparing to make extensive improvements in the building, which includes the rooms above mentioned and the room occupied by his own office next east of these. The improvements contemplated are in the way of new fronts, a change of stairway and alterations at the rear.

RES Operates At Full Capacity.

Renewable Environmental Solutions (RES) on Tuesday was granted authorization to operate without restrictions from March 7 through March 21. The authorization comes from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A news conference was held on the RES facility property on Tuesday to announce the next step in the DNR monitored process, which has been phased in since the 60 day suspension issued December 28, 2005 by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt.

Brian S. Appel, chairman and CEO of Changing World Technologies, Inc. (owners of RES) spoke at the conference about the future plans of the company. According to Appel, RES hopes to be able to meet a third of the electric power demand for the Carthage Water and Electric plant and thereby "improve the quality of life" for Carthage citizens.

"This technology works technically and economically," said Appel of the conversion process, "RES clearly has a bright future."

Appel offered his apologies for the complications caused by RES and said the company intends to become a better neighbor to the community.

R. Bruce Martin, Deputy Director of the Missouri DNR also spoke at the meeting. Martin said that DNR would continue to monitor the process at RES from the Carthage office to see if the plant can control odor emissions. The department will revoke authorization if problems arise. The trial runs are in line with directions given by Governor Blunt following the shut-down in December.

After the conference attendees were invited to tour the outside of the facility and see the outer workings of the plant. Inside tours of the plant were not permitted due to a lack of Nomex fire retardant suits, which are required for entry.

RES is a bio-refinery that turns organic matter including turkey by-products into fuel and fertilizer.

No Stench Reported

A reporter from Kansas City representin’ the National Public Radio was in town yesterday sniffin’ around for a story about RES. After talkin’ to a few folks around the Square, he made it down to the scene of the stench to attend the news conference announcin’ the DNR’s decision to allow full tilt testin’ of the facility again.

‘Course anyone with any scents ability will have a much keener appreciation of the situation bein’ right at ground zero.

The guy seemed to have a sense of the general public opinion and a basic history of the story. He said he anticipated his story to be on next Monday or Tuesday on the mornin’ edition of the NPR broadcast.

There’s a chance locals will be heard givin’ their opinions. Take a deep breath and hope it all works out.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• "When I am traveling in my car, before starting the engine I set up my cell phone to receive calls. I open it up and place it on the dash (I have one of those attached pads so it will not slide around). This way, I can just push one button to receive a speakerphone call. And I always let the caller know I am in my car." -- X.T. in Montana

• "To keep a pen handy but out of the way, I Velcro-ed it to the underside of the lip of my kitchen counter. It’s there, just not noticeable. I can pull it out with ease and stick it back just as easily. It is right below where my phone is on the wall, so I never have to scramble for a pen." -- C.C. in Texas

• Here’s a tip straight from an air-conditioner repairman: When you write your check for your mortgage or rent, clean or change your air filter. You have to do one or the other every month. It’s a great reminder.

• "I keep a yearly calendar on the inside of the door to my pantry. Everyone in the family marks his or her important dates on it, and since it is the plastic kind with an erasable surface, we can write other notes too." -- I.D. in Missouri

• For a wonderful and relaxing bath, add four tablespoons of Epsom salts and several drops of vanilla extract. Stir and soak.

• When covering your outdoor plants for a frost or freeze, use sheets or light blankets, not plastic tarps. Moisture can condense on the underside of the tarp and harm your plants.
