My dad would never admit his eyes were failing. he’d say, "Son, I can look you right in the face and tell you that my eyesight is as good as ever." I’d have to say, "Pop, I’m over here."

I think I watch too much television. Last night, my dreams kept being interrupted for commercials.

Wrecked the Jewel Mine.

Malicious Destruction of Property without Apparent Cause - Three Men Did It.

On Tuesday night three men maliciously wrecked the Jewel mine at Chitwood. So far was known none of the men had a grievance against the company and their actions are incomprehensible.

Manager Dexter had not been running a night shift, but on Tuesday he decided to have dirt hoisted at night. For this work he employed Henry Morris, C.Crammer and an unknown man. Crammer had been employed in the mine before, but Morris and the unknown man had never worked a day in the mine.

The three men had gone into the ground on the night shift. After they descended the hoisterman waited an hour before a solitary tub of dirt came up. Half an hour later another tub of dirt appeared. A little later the three men come up out of the ground saying the powder smoke left by the day man was so bad they could not longer stay in the ground.

When the day shift went to work yesterday morning they found the mine a wreck. Their tools were broken, twisted and bent beyond further use. Their working clothes were destroyed; several hundred feet of ground tracking had been torn up and distributed over the drifts, the rails twisted out of shape; the air line to the drills had been disjointed and battered beyond immediate repair; the column pipes were disconnected, and every bit of damage that could be done had been done.

Warrants have been issued for the men, but thus far they have not been captured. Manager Dexter is very anxious to have them taken into custody that he may learn from them what their purpose was in maliciously and without any apparent reason destroying the Jewel mine.

Music On The Square Requested.

The Public Safety Committee meeting scheduled to take place on Monday was not held due to a lack of quorum. Citizen H.J. Johnson was present at the police station, where the meeting was to be held, to request a partial street closure for the Carthage Acoustic Music Festival, June 10, 2006. As there was no official meeting, Johnson gave written information to Committee Chair Mike Harris, who will present the request to City Council.

Johnson requested as in previous years that the inside lane of Grant street on the East side of the Courthouse Square be blocked to allow room for the stage placement. This arrangement allows for all four sides of the square to be left open, encouraging driving and walking traffic to the event and the local downtown businesses, according to Johnson.

The event is to be held on June 10, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the Square. Johnson said that the sign-ups for the open stage will begin at 9 a.m. The open stage is to begin at 10 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. with the scheduled musical acts beginning after 1 p.m. The festival is sponsored by Powers Museum with funding assistance from the Helen S. Boylan Foundation.

Mornin',
I’ve always wondered how they gather the information used in makin’ those maps showin’ general attitudes in the different regions.

I saw one the other day that showed where folks lived that didn’t think they were gettin’ enough sleep. How do they figure that, call folks in the middle of the night and ask if they are awake? ‘Course I was interested to see that nearly the whole state of Missouri, except for the K.C and St. Louis area, felt rested most of the time. The map showed Kansas and Oklahoma feelin’ a little tired more often.

The real question is, "exactly what does it all mean?" A good portion of Florida also reported a restful state. I don’t know if it means we are efficient or just lazy.

This is some fact, but mostly,

Here's A Tip
By JoAnn Derson

• "I drink bottled water, since it’s so easy and portable. To keep my bottle cool in the car, I use a thick sock. I slip the bottle into it. It also stays put better in my cupholder." -- M.C. in Mississippi

• "This tip comes from my office. Someone lost the toilet-paper-roll holder. We don’t know where it went. After several days of keeping the roll of TP on the back of the tank, somebody looped two heavy-duty rubber bands around the two sides of the toilet-paper-holder fixture, and ran the bands though the inside of the toilet-paper roll. Genius!" -- A.A. in Florida

• "To help pick up pins and needles, keep a small magnet on your sewing table or in your sewing basket. You can just swipe the magnet over the floor or work surface, and it will attract the pins." -- C.L. in Illinois

• "I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. I got smart by writing each bill on the calendar a week ahead of when it was due. Now I never mail the bills too close to the due date." -- R.F. in New Mexico

• "I saved more than $10 a month on my cell-phone plan by setting call dates. I used to call family and friends back home willy-nilly, until I realized that it was eating up my cell minutes. Now I set up weekly dates to call Mom and Dad (they love that), and I e-mail friends with a time and date for a long chat -- always on the weekends or after the "free nights" part of my plan kicks in. The result is that I used so many fewer minutes that I was able to drop down a plan, hence the $10 savings!" -- College student in Iowa
